Turning 40. Things went by much quicker than I expected. Here’s an attempt to put into words what
shifted along the way — what I gained, what I lost, and what I stopped caring about entirely.
Funnily enough (or sadly, depends on your type of humour), in all the projects I worked on, the
decision to go with Angular was rarely driven by hands-on frontend experience. It was usually made
from a C-level perspective — prioritising perceived safety and enterprise credibility over
developer ergonomics.
I was involved in the R&D of NEEO right from the start. It was a good time — until it wasn’t.
Since I left the company about two or three years in, I’ve often wondered what could have been if
we had done things differently. This is a postmortem. And maybe a way for me to finally put this
behind me.
The docs tell me it’s directly related to the episode I had in spring, where I spent 2 weeks in
hospital due to a hematolysis. Apparently, during a hematolysis, the liver works overtime to get
rid of all the dead blood cells, thus creating a lot of waste material that is subsequently stored
as gall in the gall bladder. The chemical composition is out of balance though, causing stones
(salts) to form there in. If those stones decide to move, that’s when you start to feel pain.
I’ve ran a few E-Commerce projects in the past. Mostly small business online stores using stacks
like Drupal Commerce and other PHP based cart solutions. Things always got a bit tacky when trying
to match the UI/UX of the cart solution to existing CMS based websites though. At some point,
customisations just got too complicated and intrusive and - which is important in the segment I’m
floating in - too costly: spending a lot of money to match two different platforms.
There’s a new kind of minimalist movement sprouting, trying to make websites as small as possible.
Well - “new” - taking into account, that their approach is basically to make websites like we used
to make them in 2001 .. this can hardly be considered “new”. But anyways, I was trying to see how
large a couple of mainstream websites are on their first pageload and how that translates into a
rough estimate in terms of transferred assets and loading time.
It feels quite surreal to look back. It’s been only a few months but with everything happening
since, feels like a year. The world changed dramatically since.
About 2 years ago I started a bit of an odyssee to find a convenient, affordable and production
ready way to deploy my web application stack. My goal was to make it viable by the above criteria,
especially to have a stack/product in a segment that would normally end up on a shared webhost
with clients that are used to shared webhosting pricing.
Some prints turn out great, some fail completely and most aren’t really practically useful ;-).
The key “fix” above is the only print we’ve made so far that actually has a functional aspect to
it. I have to admit, most of the prints are just for fun. But it’s immensely satisfying to fix
even a bloody mailbox key.
Roughly 2 months ago I noticed that one of the EPs I released on Enough
Records showed up on Spotify. Turns out it was pushed to
Spotify and YouTube via routenote.com on behalf of Enough. I got in
touch with PS/Enough to find out more and we ended up putting together an Album made of two EPs,
both of whom weren’t broadly publicly released. There’s no new tracks but I still find it funny to
have my stuff visible on Spotify. :-)
I wanted to bring back comments for my blog articles for a while now. The downside of using a
headless CMS is to some extent, that there are mostly no batteries included. Most headless systems
are pretty unspecific and versatile, which is nice in so many ways. But pretty time consuming in
others. I could have modelled a comment system on sanity.io, hooked up some endpoints on my
Express and all of that jazz but decided against it. It just gets too complex, way too quickly.
And I really don’t feel like re-inventing the wheel, once again.
I was using Adobe software since I first got a (cough not entirely legal cough) version of
Photoshop about 20 years ago. When I started my own business, I bought licences for Creative Suite
and switched over to the subscription model as soon as it was introduced. Since my daily business
shifted to being very screen-centric and print became a side effect of sorts, I was tossing around
the idea of quitting Adobe software for quite a while. Since my renewal was up by December 2019, I
ended up cancelling. To be honest, it felt weird.
GitLab offers free shared runners (with a quota) to run your CI pipelines. This is extremeley
generous and I’ve come to depend heavily on using them for my projects. Combined with their free
tier, I don’t see a reason to not use GitLab. I haven’t paid a single dime for one year, things
are stable and there’s only little down time on the shared runner pool.
The climate. We love talking about it, don’t we. We can spend multiple news cycles analysing
someone’s remarks about wether or not climate change is real, while we have proof right at our
doorsteps. Or, lately, wether the situation is man-made or not. Seems like we accepted the fact
that the bowl is broken after a decade of looking at it, falling down from the table in slow
motion.
Well we are there again. Tons of features you’re dying to use but a certain platform, the one your
client insists you absolutely HAVE to support (“the CEO is using IE11, so..”), does not support
them. I have been playing this game since IE6 first got the heat and history is repeating itself
in a strange fashion with the stuff coming from Redmond.
Visual Studio Code has come a long way since I first started to
use it in early 2017. It’s fast and responsive, I can style it to my convenience (e.g. font sizes
in the drawer etc). And it supports almost everything I need on a daily basis: TS, styled
components, Angular, React, a bit of PHP now and then. But there’s some things that are tickling
my nerves big time:
I’ve had the opportunity to dive into React quite extensively for the past two months. Large
project. Many, many components. Rather complicated setup on the backend, including a Python CMS
which hydrates the SPA, in many different ways, including acting as a REST intermediary service
for some other 3rd party APIs.
Cleaning up my digital footprint allowed me to revisit a lot of services I have used in the past
and basically just forgot about in the last 7-8 years. In the process, I realised how fragmented
the internet is. How much content is there, outdated, sitting on a bleak corner of the web on a
service that once thrived and has been superseded by “the next cool thing”?
I am going to delete all my social media accounts in the next few days. Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn, Google+ and so forth. Was thinking long and hard about this, but it’s the best way
forward. I could just delete all the apps first, but hell, why bother. Time to cut the middle man
and continuing defragmentation. Or to put it in more elaborate terms: bye bye bitches. Hehe.
This early access game was on sale on steam after I noticed that Dungeon Keeper 1 was for free on
Origin. DK1 is great in so many ways, I played it for a few hours (320x240 or so, ugh) and decided
to look around again for a “real spiritual successor”.
I’ve spent a lot of time making music (or noise) in the past 18 years and I noticed a sort of
inevitable progression that ended in the inevitable lack of inspiration for me.
Two years passed without me writing a single line on this blog. Not that I care too much, but .. So maybe you’ve heard (probably) but I co-founded a startup called NEEO with a friend somewhere in between and this is what kept me busy for the most part. Happy Robot Graphics is officially being retired and I just hope this other thing succeeds.
It seems like some kind of holy quest to find a viable solution for multicolumn content in WYSIWYG editors without annoying your users too much - but at the same time provide a solution which is technically maintainable and doesn’t put too much markup inside WYSIWYG fields. Quite the masochistic idea..
Probably the worst developer experience in terms of e-commerce solutions I had so far was with Prestashop. Maybe it works for people using nothing but the default theme and replacing their logo. But anything a little more complicated than that results in a mess in one way or another.
I was playing around with CDN, a module for Drupal which provides everything necessary to run your own “poorman’s content delivery network”. However, in my case it’s not really a network of servers, just a simple and cheap way to circumvent some of the HTTP protocols limits of only allowing 2 concurrent connections per host.
A couple of weeks ago I was very optimistic about using Mollom as my primary anti-spam solution. However, I recently had a site where 14’000 comments were posted in a matter of 3 days, despite the fact that Mollom was enabled and should have prohibited exactly that.
I have to admit, I joined the party a little late. That’s mostly because I really didn’t have the need to go down the “feature-road” so far. There’s already tons of “features” floating around and most if not all Drupal distributions rely on this module for one or more .. snareroll .. features. :-)
I use this SCSS snippet in combination with Omega and Browserclass. It replaces the default logo of a Drupal theme with an SVG graphic file instead of serving hi-res bitmap images for retina displays. So you end up with 2 files instead of .. a dozen.
A quick Update regarding jQuery.Columnizer + Drupal 7: Good news everyone! As mentioned in the comments over here, jQuery.Columnizer recently got updated and now supports older versions of jQuery too. I switched the article display on this site to take advantage of columnizer and it works out of the box with the bundled jQuery version of Drupal 7. Fancy magazine layouts, here we come!
When working with small businesses, sometimes you come across very, very basic needs. Mostly based on very, very small budgets. One of those is a basic shopping cart, a no-thrills-solution which just provides a cart and a checkout, without any kind of payment back-end needs.
With the sheer amount of modules available for Drupal, it is sometimes a tedious task to find one to solve a specific shortcoming of Drupal core. This is another article in my ongoing series about the hidden gems in Drupal’s repository. This time, it’s all about Comments.
The amount of todo-list apps for iOS and OSX is large. But since 10.7, all you really need to get a more or less productive environment set-up for your one-man-show is already built into iOS and OSX: The Reminders app.
Drupal Anti-Spam: The Second Try: So, to make it quick and painless: You won’t get around an external spam service like Mollom or Akismet. I used every available option, but I wasn’t able to keep the spam at bay. Since I switched my sites back to Mollom, I had no more spam comments or form spam in general to deal with. The problem is: I also noticed at least 2-3 outages of the Mollom REST service. Oh well. To cite the Stones: “You can’t always get what you want.”
Mail.app on mac has a number of small but sometimes very annoying quirks which require third party plugins. For example, the well known winmail.dat problem or Outlook users not being able to open attachements. Beside that, there’s a couple of weird “design decisions” the development team took, like for example, if you write an HTML e-mail, the receiving client doesn’t display text formatting as you think it would. Instead, it just uses it’s default text styling, which in case of Outlook is Times New Roman, 12pt. In short: fugly. There’s workarounds for everything, but I just want to write mails for crying out loud.
Drupal currently flushes page cache on every CRON run. Eh? Looks like there’s a patch waiting in D7 to address this issue. I was quite surprised to find out about this behaviour over here while I was reasearching some other performance related things.
I was playing around with CSS3 multi-column lately, mainly on this blog, to see what’s possible and what’s not. Here’s my verdict: insanely cool in new browsers, but not production ready. Stick to DIVs for now. Here’s how to do exactly that with CKeditor.
With every new project that comes along, I try to optimize the UX of the content creation process of my Drupal base install. Mainly focusing on the content layout process and the means to add media and inline images. One very important part in the process is the WYSIWYG editor and it’s ability to play well with inserting images or allowing for easy linking of existing entity content on the site.
Installed an SSD as system disk in my hackintosh. Migration worked perfectly, speed is amazing. Regular harddiscs are an incredible bottleneck. :-P Before you buy a new Macbook (for example) upgrade the thing with an SSD HD. It might already provide enough speed.
BTW. The model I chose was the “OCZ Vertex 2″. Seemed to be the best one for OSX due to it’s lack of TRIM support on an OS level.
While Drupal provides a lot of extensions and gimmicks, one of the big downsides currently is image handling. Basic image handling, like inserting images into a node’s body field are quite the task to achieve – there’s plenty of approaches but almost all fail at some point. Mostly because of bugs or lack of basic features.
Basically, from the enduser point of view, a vanilla install of Drupal (stable/core) doesn’t provide any way of creating richtext content, including image embedding. Instead, there are like 7 different ways to do this. One of the things I would like to have changed in Drupal 7 is … While I’m typing this blog post in WordPress, I notice 2 things: first, I never had to worry a single second about WYSIWYG functionality. Second (and most important), media asset management and embedding options are already there, with all the gimmicks you can imagine. Or, to be more specific, with all the gimmicks you actually need.
I wish to see the same approach for Drupal. I don’t want to choose between 8 different richtext-editors, nor between 4 different approaches on inserting an image into text. I want to have TinyMCE in the Drupal core and a streamlined image handling using CCK/FileField: a) because CCK is moved to core and b) because Insert (formerly known as “FileField Insert”) does this thing with a few tweaks already and so far is the most promising approach to streamlined content creation and editing.
After all, it took me around half a year now to find an actually stable, easy to handle and overhead-less solution for this. Most of the functionality I’m currently using isn’t even marked “stable” yet, thus I’m taking a big risk for a feature which is considered “basic” from the enduser POV. Making content creation and media management easy is the whole point of a web content management system, isn’t it? Thus, I officially vote for a core solution for that! :-)
I previously wrote that ImageAssist is a nice solution for exactly that. There’s a number of problems with IA which made me switch to a simpler solution (FileField/Insert): a) it doesn’t support ImageAPI/ImageCache/CCK, which is becoming the new de-facto standard for filehandling with D7, b) avoid using unnecessary JS based UI functionality if you rely on a colorful selection of components, c) I ran into all sorts of basic styling problems and wasn’t able to find workarounds for most of them, d) the usability is a pain, e) buggy and slow release cycles, f) and that is a general rule: avoid anything which opens a popup-window and is a key component. :P Keep it simple stupid, please.
I am really really tempted to officially drop IE6/5.5/5 support and just show those browsers a big, huge “UPDATE NOW” image ASAP. I can’t tell you how very excited I am that it seems like IE6 is going to vanish probably during the next 6 months or so. Life is going to be so easy. Rainbows, hummingbirds, candy falling from the sky.. Ah.. and once again, knowledge to put away in the drawer. :P
I was trying to figure out how to create a simple way to keep my 15+ drupal installations clean and up to date with a single mouseclick for a long time now. Of course, drush was the first thing I looked at, but since it is a command line tool and all my clients are on shared hosting servers without ssh access, that didn’t seem quite the solution.
My first goal was to create an easy way to keep the codebase up to date with the rather frequently updated sources from drupal.org. My base install consists of around 68 modules, some of them get updated at least every two weeks. If you try to keep up with that on a regular base by overwriting/synching every install by hand, it will take you approximately 2 hours every week to do so, including clicking yourself thru each sites database update procedure. At first, I used an Automator action in combination with Transmit, an FTP client providing plugins to Automator for synching files. This was quite ok, but really slow. Slow because of Transmit, as I found out later.
So, long story short, I found the following procedure kinda solid enough for production websites. To be able to execute shell scripts on a webserver, PHP’s exec(); function needs to be allowed to run. Second, you need a fast and scriptable FTP client: I found Yummy FTP to be quite versatile and fast for synching. At least twice as fast as Transmit FTP. Also, since there will be the need for drush, you need that, too. :)

I previously introduced you to a list of my favourite plugins. Some time has passed and I am able to present to you an updated version of it. New plugins are marked with *, removed plugins are marked with † and the “swiss knife of modules” is marked with a +. Keep in mind that some of these modules are basically only libraries which provide functionality for other modules to work.
I listen to a lot of different music and thus there have been quite a number of tracks accumulated over the past 15 years. A wacky 22’146 tracks to date. Keeping this enjoyable on a file-system level is almost impossible. One of the first things I did when I switched to Mac 5 years ago was to start importing tracks into iTunes. It took me quite a while, but it was well spent and I’d never again use winamp or anything like it.
On this website, you can run a browser based “virtual machine” which loads IE 6/7/8, Firefox 2/3, Opera and Safari (all for Windows). Only problem: Requires Windows and IE to run. But still: quite handy if you don’t want to mess around with your installation of win/IE (in my case, the VM running on OSX :P) but still want to be able to view your websites in different browsers and be actually able to browse them.
I use the following plugins on every base installation, since it covers (most) of my client’s needs. The * indicates, that this is a plugin which is active on basically every installation. Also, I only run “real” CRON tasks via cPanel options – no virtual CRON triggers. Additionally, I have a test installation which is the only install to check for updates and has all plugins enabled to do so. This installation is also used for testing possible version conflicts between plugins (which, well, happens).
Welcome to the new WordPress-powered blog on genox.ch. As you may have noticed, there’s not much fancy layoutism around yet, but this is going to change over time. The switch from Serendipity to WordPress was something I planned to do since WP 2.8 got released. S9y is far from being actively developped anymore (I don’t blame anyone, it’s totally understandable that a project depending on 1 main developer is significantly going to struggle over time because ressources are very limited).
As for the potential looks of the new blog – it’s gonna be different. Dark times are over.

For all you people “getting old”: Twine is a way to collect, share and connect information, featuring some fancy web 3.0 technology. In a way, it’s like digg + delicious + semantic web functionality. I’m not gonna go deeper for now, if you’re interested, go have a look: What is Twine?
Now this took me about 2 days to figure. Most Epson printers don’t support any sort of PostScript printing. You will notice that once you try to print a page from Illustrator or InDesign: The printer-icon shows up in the dock, just to disappear 10 seconds later. Meanwhile, the printer makes a little rumba - but no printing whatsoever happens. The image printing quality is absolutely stunning and it would be a waste to not use this printer for proofing purpose. But this made me a little disappointed.

Here’s a wallpaper for your wide screen. Took this shoot on a foggy night, while trying to take photos for a HDR image composition (which turned out quite crappy, but it was my first try ;) ). I was quite happy about the result so I decided to post the image as a desktop background.
What’s the point in saying “I’m feeling good” if you know, that you are actually far from feeling “real” good? That, as soon as you stop taking those light meds, you can start all over again? We’re so damn good at lying to ourselfes, to the point where we actually believe. This includes lies from “I’m the best” to “I’m not worth a penny”. Bad luck, if you end up lying the wrong lies to yourself, one could say. Putting the process in reverse on the other hand.. well. The first thing you will realise: How things should be and how things actually are, from a rational point of view. And from that point on (if you really got it), you feel a sting in your brain’s frontal lobe, everytime you realise that what you’re thinking is actually “lying to yourself”. The abyss you try to avoid like cats avoid water. Basic instinct. Because you know that it will take you one hell of a struggle to get out again. It’s fascinating how simple and how complex this whole issue is, simultaneously. Or maybe I’m just a little bipolar on top of everything. But if it’s just that.. keep it coming. ;)

Buenzli is soon over, the pricegiving is being prepared as I write this. The last days have been very busy and I managed to enter 2 entries to the competitions, one piece of music and a wild demo (animation movie). Triztan and myself worked for the better part of a week on making a little more than a minute of animation. Altho I’m satisfied with the result (taking into account I used After Effects for the first time a little more than 3 weeks ago and never did any sort of compositing before..), it could have been longer. But I think it’s a good start, especially because now we have a rather stable workflow, tested and running. Let’s see what happens next. Talked to cosmic/nuance and we (triztan and myself) might pull off something together, new group, or so, dunno yet. We’ll see.

There’s also a HD version (720p), but the size is too big and no one likes downloading 200MB for one and a half minutes of fun. Just watch it fullscreen and imagine the corners to be sharp. =) I will upload a Flashversion as soon as I figure out how to embed it or have the time to create a youtube account.
Koljas Flickr stream hat heute ein Update bekommen. Film Nummer 6 hat’s mittlerweile auch bis in die Schweiz und zu mir geschafft. Er ist zur Zeit wohl irgendwo in Georgien, genaueres weiss ich leider nicht. Soviel ich weiss, geht es ihm jedoch gut.
Apples iCal kann Kalender auf 2 Arten veröffentlichen: Auf einen .mac Account oder einen “privaten Webserver”. Bei letzerem muss es sich jedoch um einen WebDAV-Server handeln. Das geht zwar - irgendwie - mit einem PHP PEAR Package, aber ich habe ehrlich gesagt keine Lust das selbst zu coden. Mit diesen beiden Varianten erhält man jedoch keine bidirektionalen Synchronisationsmöglichkeiten, als Groupware-Kalender kann man das nicht oder nur bedingt brauchen. Apple hat vor geraumer Zeit ihren iCal-Server als OpenSource Version veröffentlicht - nur leider braucht das wiederum ein bisschen mehr als Shared Hosting bei cyon. Dasselbe gilt für die restlichen iCal/CalDAV Server Projekte, ohne mindestens ein Dedicated Hosting geht da nix (Python, Apache Module, host-file Einträge, ..).
OpenOffice hat kürzlich die erste Beta der Version 3 veröffentlicht. Das interessante an der Sache für Mac user ist, dass die neue OO-Version nun nicht mehr X11 benötigt. Das war der Grund für mich zuerst auf NeoOffice zu wechseln, da die X11 Version nicht wahnsinnig performant lief. Auch im Vergleich zu Office 2008 für Mac von Microsoft ist die OpenOffice 3 Beta schneller, stabiler und braucht weitaus weniger Ressourcen. Vielen Dank!
Vor knapp 2 Monaten habe ich mir einen E-Book-Reader von Sony gekauft. Nachdem ich in der Zwischenzeit wohl um die 1’200 Seiten gelesen habe, lohnt es sich einmal eine Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen. Grundsätzlich finde ich den Reader sehr gut, der Text auf dem Display ist extrem angenehm zu Lesen und seit ich den Reader habe, lese ich ca. 3 mal soviel. Die Probleme, die sich mir gestellt haben, gehen grundsätzlich auch nicht in Richtung Hardware. Die funktioniert wirklich toll.

Ist eine Weile her, seit ich das letzte Mal meinen Nicecast Streamserver am Laufen hatte. Da ich nun meistens zu Hause arbeite, läuft wieder mehr Sound und jeder Interessierte kann sich in meinen “Bürostream” hängen. Am besten geht das mit einem Klick auf diesen Link: Radio Genox.
Das All ist wunderschön und ich würde alles dafür geben, ein Spektakel wie dieses einmal mit blossem Auge zu sehen. Vielleicht ein Grund dafür, weshalb ich fast 2 Jahre lang täglich EVE Online gespielt habe. Sight seeing im All wäre der absolute Hammer, aber wohl leider nicht mehr während meiner kurzen Existenz.
Wirklich sehr beeindruckend, dieses Plugin (VST/RTAS/AU) eröffnet völlig neue Möglichkeiten. Auf der Webseite hat es ein paar Flash-Videos, die ihr euch unbedingt ansehen müsst. Ich kann mir sehr gut vorstellen, damit zu arbeiten. Hier liegen noch 10GB Samples rum, die ich meistens nicht verwenden kann, da ich in einer anderen Tonart editiere als dass Sample Material. Aber scheinbar kann man das jetzt ganz einfach beheben. Mein Mund stand wirklich für 10s offen, das ist so etwas, wovon ich bis jetzt ab und zu geträumt habe. :-)
Gestern Abend war die grosse Gala des Best of Swiss Web und siehe da: Die Cmsbox Jungs gewinnen den Master! Wenn das nicht geil ist. :-) Gratulation aus dem Hause genox!
Diese Woche am Mittwoch war ich in Basel um Patrick (vIbe) zu treffen, den ich seit fast 10 Jahren nicht mehr “in real life” getroffen habe. Wir hatten damals zusammen eine Demogroup gegründet (“Phaze:Shipht”) und hatten sogar 1-2 Demos veröffentlicht. Aber das war’s dann auch schon. Dann brach der Kontakt zwischen den Membern ab und alle sind ihre Wege gegangen. Was aus Slater, Wombat und Zodi geworden ist, kann ich nur erahnen. Wombat war glaube ich sogar einmal an einer Buenzli, aber er hat mich wohl nicht wiedererkannt. Respektive, ich habe ihn wohl auch nicht erkannt. Das ist zwar auch kein Wunder, zumal wir alle damals mehr oder weniger pubertierende Jung-Nerds gewesen sind.
Das hat nun wohl wirklich niemand erwartet: Das neue NIN-Album “Ghosts I-IV” ist als Torrent verfügbar und zwar ganz legal unter einer Creative Commons-Lizenz. Das ist wirklich sehr cool. Genauer gesagt ist nur der erste Teil der 36 Tracks starken Collection als Torrent freigegeben. Den restlichen Teil kann man auf der offiziellen NIN-Website für 5$ kaufen. Beim momentanen Dollar-Kurs .. Oh momma! :)

Jaaaa, es gibt etwas gratis!! Native Instruments hat ihren KorePlayer gratis zum Download freigegeben. Man kann sich eine Seriennummer und den Downloadlink auf der Webseite von NI besorgen. Das Ganze gibt’s als Mac und Windows Download.
NI will wohl den Absatz der Samplepacks ein wenig pushen, deshalb gibt’s den Player mal gratis als Zückerchen. Dann wollen wir mal schauen, was das Teil so kann.
Das Phänomen ist logischerweise älter als das Internet, nur war es nicht so ganz einfach zu trollen, als man der Person noch gerade in die Augen schauen musste, während man sich von seinem geistlosen Brei entledigte. Ich habe meine liebe Mühe mit solchen Leuten, denn ich verstehe einfach nicht, was es denn nun Gutes bringen soll. Sich mitteilen in Form von Beleidigungen und Anspielungen unter der Gürtellinie ist nun wirklich das Allerletzte. Zum Glück bin ich nicht so wahnsinnig populär als dass ich damit täglich zu kämpfen hätte, habe aber auch schon meine Erfahrungen damit gemacht in den letzten 2 Jahren.
CoverSutra ist ein kleines Tool zum Steuern von iTunes: Transportfunktionen, Bewertung, etc. Last.fm scrobbler und eine Suchfunktion, welche ähnlich wie Spotlight funktioniert, sind auch gleich integriert. Kann ich also nur empfehlen. Das einzige Problem ist, dass sich das Tool von Zeit zu Zeit beendet, ohne Fehlermeldung und nichts. Aber das wird sicher bald gefixt.
Thomas hat mir den Link diese Woche geschickt und ich finde es eine gute Sache. Auf macheist.com bekommt man für $49 ein paar ganz nette OSX Tools und der Erlös der Aktion geht vollumfänglich an verschiedene gemeinnützige Organisationen. Die Aktion dauert aber nur noch wenige Stunden.
Seit gestern ist die neue Webseite vom mediagenerator online. Wenn ihr die Seite besucht, werdet ihr feststellen, dass es ein paar elementare Änderungen gegeben hat: Ein neues Logo, ein neues CMS (Cmsbox) und vieles mehr. Eine weitere elementare Änderung in diesem Zusamenhang: Ich werde meine Dienstleistungen in Sachen Grafik / Webdesign in Zukunft nur noch via mediagenerator anbieten. Es handelt sich dabei aber um keine Firma sondern um eine Bürogemeinschaft zwischen Daniel Bachmann (aka. triztan/vantage) und mir.
VoodooPad ist eine kleine (gratis) Applikation für OSX mit welcher man - kurz gesagt - ein oder mehrere Wiki-artige Dokumente auf dem lokalen Rechner erstellen und pflegen kann. Ideal um Ideen festzuhalten, kleine Informationsbrocken zu speichern, Todolists zu führen oder mal kurz etwas scribbeln währenddem man an der Strippe hängt. Sehr praktisch!
OS X und Apple sind ja toll, aber sowas gibt einem schon zu denken. Im OS X Wörterbuch ist das Wort “Portfolio” scheinbar nicht enthalten. Dafür wird einem von der Korrekturhilfe “Pornofilm” als beste Option angeboten. Portfolio/Pornofilm .. Naja. :-) Zur Auswahl stehen auch “Postfolio”, “Wortfolio” und “Portofolio”. Was zum Geier?
Heute kam was ganz tolles mit der Post: LINEA, vom deutsch-spanischen Designer Gabriel Kornreich. Ultimativ simpel, aber mein Nacken dankt es mir bereits nach ein paar Stunden. Der Herr Kornreich macht die Laptopständer übrigends in seiner Küche von Hand.
Kimai ist eine Opensource Timetracking-Suite in PHP mit MySQL. Sieht noch ganz nett aus und wird auch fleissig weiterentwickelt, im Gegensatz zu achievo. Im Vergleich zu den erst kuerzlich hier angesprochenen Alternativen (sidejobtrack, appmite) sind wir hierbei auch nicht auf einem fremden Server sondern haben alle Daten auf unserem eigenen Server. Ich habe mir das nochmals ueberlegt und irgendwie macht es mich doch ein wenig nachdenklich alle diese Daten ‘irgendwo’ zu lagern. Dann schon lieber auf meinem eigenen Server, auch wenn ich halt selber mal patchen muss.

Am Anfang war das Gekritzel ..
Die cmsbox website ist online und sieht doch ganz schnuckelig aus, oder was meint ihr? - Das Design kommt aus dem Hause genox, der Inhalt vom cmsbox-Marketing Team. Die Umsetzung (CSS etc.) hat Simon Raess mit höchster Präzision ( =D ) erledigt. In naher Zukunft werden auch ein paar andere ganz nette Gadgets die Hallen der cmsbox Developers in Bern verlassen. Man darf also gespannt sein.
Gefährlich
Ironic Sans hat einen Artikel geschrieben in welchem er ein paar Logos von Terroristenorganisationen zusammengestellt hat. Ich find das noch ganz interessant, rein vom gestalterischen Standpunkt her. Natürlich gibts hunderte Idioten welche die ganze Wirkung nicht ausblenden können und mal einfach drauflos bashen.. Aber ist halt auch ein gefährliches Thema. Naja was solls, trotzdem interessant =).
Sodeli!! Der gröbste “Rush” ist vorbei und in 3 Tagen setze ich mich für 1.5 Monate ab nach Toronto um Ahoo zu besuchen. Ich wünsche euch einen schönen Sommer, vielleicht schreibe ich von Zeit zu Zeit mal etwas im Blog. Ohne Arbeit werde ich wohl drüben auch nicht durchkommen, deshalb ist die Absenz vorwiegend virtuell. Sonst könnt ich ja gar nicht 1.5 Monate einfach so abhauen. So gut geht’s denn auch wieder nicht! hehe..
Funeral-mood is very odd. One of the few occasions where words are mostly in the wrong place. The “zone” is in between sadness, hope and believing. They always pull me down to earth. Grounding. Oh well. In the recent case, the funeral was a relief, because the person was in a very bad shape, healthwise - a relief from suffering. I didn’t knew him that well, but I know his son - and the son of this son. And everyone around those, basically.

Nun, ich habe nie erwartet, dass sich das Ganze zu einem internationalen Fall entwickeln könnte. In letzter Zeit passieren jedoch schon sehr, sehr interessante Dinge. Und wenn man ein wenig mit google spielt, findet man die interessantesten Sachen ..
..habe ich mich gestern Vormittag gefragt. Bis jetzt war ich mit Azureus eigentlich ganz zufrieden, jedenfalls unter Windows. Unter OSX auf meinem “alten” G4 Powerbook verspeist der ganze Java-Unterbau von Azureus jedoch viel zu viel Ressourcen, CPU und Memory gleichermassen.
Wie wir alle ja mittlerweile wissen, ist IE 7 schon eine Weile draussen. Die Zugriffsstatistiken auf meine Website sind aber der Meinung, dass erst um die 10% der Views via IE 7 abgerufen werden. Das heisst … weiterhin Workarounds bauen für IE 6. Vorallem wenn es um die Darstellung transparenter PNG’s geht, was jeder state-of-the-art-Browser problemlos hinbekommt, ausser natürlich IE 6.. das Problem ist auch nicht neu, es gibt massenweise Workarounds. Hier mal die 2 praktischsten Lösungsansätze, die mir in den letzten paar Jahren immer wieder geholfen haben:
Pilze sammeln
Der Titel passt zu diesem Blog-Eintrag wie die ganze Story in das Weltbild eines rational denkenden Menschen: gar nicht. Denn die unendliche Geschichte geht weiter: Nach einer relativ ruhigen Phase (vielen Dank, wenigstens haben Sie mir meinen Toronto-Urlaub gegönnt, Herr Zumstein) ist der Chef der “grössten Agentur in Grenchen” wiedermal unterwegs und da ihm das Material ausgegangen ist, hat er mich sogar einmal auf der Front als Feature untergebracht. Scheinbar ist bis heute der Unterschied zwischen Blog und Newsportal noch nicht so ganz klar geworden.. Auch, dass diese “Medienplattform” keine “Medienplattform” ist, sondern ein Platz wo ich meine privaten Gedanken veröffentliche, für meine Kollegen und lieben Bekannten. Das schliesst Sie schon einmal aus, Herr Zumstein.

Nun bin ich seit knapp einer Woche 25 Jahre jung. Nochmals vielen Dank an alle Gratulierenden, war wirklich sehr nett. Ich habe keine riesige Feier geschmissen, nur im kleinen Kreise gemütlich gegessen und getrunken. Und was gibts sonst noch Neues zu berichten? - Zur Zeit läuft alles gut, ich habe eigentlich (ausnahmsweise :) ) gar nichts zu motzen. Gibt’s gar nicht, oder?!
Was passieren würde, wenn Microsoft das iPod-Packaging gemacht hätte, kann man sich hier reinziehen. Witzig und abgrundtief ehrlich. Gefunden via ad.freak.
Diesen Trip zu machen war wohl eine meiner besten Entscheidungen der letzten 10 Jahre. Ich habe einige sehr wichtige Erfahrungen machen können. Mehr kann ich dazu eigentlich nicht sagen. Was den Tourismus-Teil angeht, Toronto ist eine relativ grosse Stadt mit einer interessanten Downtown. Ahoo und ich sind oft planlos zwischen den Wolkenkratzern hin und her gelaufen, ein Gefühl welches ich sehr vermisse. Und das nicht nur wegen den Wolkenkratzern. Ich fühle mich sehr wohl zwischen endlos hohen Häusertürmen. Ich glaube jedoch, dass dafür nicht unbedingt die Architektur verantwortlich war, sondern meine ständige Begleiterin. Ehrlich gesagt war mir der touristische Teil relativ egal, ich bin ja auch nicht nach Kanada geflogen um mir Sehenswürdigkeiten anzuschauen. Abgesehen vom üblichen “Es ist halt alles ein wenig grösser dimensioniert als in der Schweiz”-Quervergleich ist mir eigentlich auch nicht viel aufgefallen. Mein Fokus war hauptsächlich auf eine Person gerichtet und nicht auf die Stadt oder die Leute, wobei ich es sehr genossen habe, diese Eindrücke auf mich wirken zu lassen.
Was für eine Woche. Nachdem ich mehr oder weniger alle noch offenen Sachen erledigt habe, kann ich mich ausgiebig auf meine Ferien freuen, die restlichen Socken falten und meinen Rucksack packen. Das Ticket für den Flug nach Toronto liegt nun schon länger als einen Monat auf meinem Schreibtisch und nach Adam Riese sind es jetzt genau noch 2 Tage. Ja, in 48h bin ich in 10km Höhe über dem Nordatlantik! Bloody Hell! =D Mit jeder weiteren vorbeigezogenen Stunde fühle ich mich ein wenig entspannter, fast wie beim Trip nach NYC. Nur diesesmal aus einem etwas anderen, schwer zu umschreibenden Grund. :)

Ich fühle mich geehrt.
Ach, ja. Wie schön. Danke, Welt, für all diese schrägen Leute. Heute gabs Post von niemand anderem als dem rechtschaffenden Journalisten. Intellektuelle Konstrukte sind doch etwas tolles. Nur sollte man sie auch ansatzweise Verstehen, bevor man irgendwelchen Bullshit erzählt. Wieso er mich nicht auch gleich für eine Konventionalstrafe von 50’000 verpflichten will ist mir ein Rätsel.
Unheilige Verschwörungen…
Das schlimmste daran ist, dass es scheinbar keine rechtlichen Mittel gibt um jemanden, dessen Sinn für Realität komplett degeneriert ist, verbal ruhig zu stellen. Noch viel schlimmer finde ich, dass solche Personen sogar Gerichtskosten verursachen könnten, für welche der Steuerzahler aufkommen muss. Und fast schon ein wenig ängstlich stimmt mich der Gedanke, dass solche Leute durch den mangelnden Überblick ihrer Beschützer auch noch Recht bekommen könnten. Das lässt wirklich kleine Zweifel am System entstehen..
Firmenverzeichnisse
Es spielt sich ein interessanter Trend ab. Jedenfalls für alle Unternehmen, die sich irgendwann - irgendwie - aus irgendeinem Grund einmal ins WIR-Verzeichnis eingetragen haben. Seit ca. 2-3 Wochen häufen sich die Mitteilungen über neu gegründete Firmenverzeichnisse für das lokale Gewerbe in der Region/Nation (come on, die Schweiz ist so klein, das geht doch alles noch unter “regionale Verzeichnisse”… :P ). Ich meine, der business case ist jetzt wirklich nichts Neues. Absolut nicht. Bin nur ich das oder ist im Moment wieder ein wenig Aufbruchstimmung im “1001 useless directory indexes”-Internet? :-)

samuz media vs. pgm medien
Also, jetzt kann ichs mir nicht mehr verkneifen. SAMUZ Media verklagt unseren Redakteur. Er scheint irgendwie alle zu verklagen, die nicht seiner Meinung sind. Ist das normal? Man lese sich kurz durch seine Artikel und man stellt fest: das kanns einfach nicht sein.
Heute war es an der Zeit eine Pause zu machen. Diese Woche hat ihre Spuren hinterlassen, ich bin ein wenig ausgeschossen. Ich hab wiedermal meine Kamera vorgekramt und bin in der Abenddämmerung losgezogen um ein paar nette Fotos zu machen. Achja, es gab auch wiedermal ein paar neue Bilder für die Headerimg-Rotation.
Die erste PR-Aktion der buenz.li an einer LAN-Party war ein Erfolg in vielerlei Hinsicht. Die AirPlane mit 1’100 Teilnehmern bot uns eine interessante Plattform um die Demoscene zu promoten. Die LAN-Party fand im Eventdock des Flughafens in Kloten statt, füllte sogleich auch das ganze Dock. Eine ziemlich geile Location.
Von gestern auf heute war ich bei Kolja und Julia in St. Croix (hier). Kolja hat mir die “Stadt” gezeigt und wir sind noch ein wenig gewandert. Ja, gemütlich ists allemal dort oben. Zum Abendessen gabs eine lokale Käsespezialität, deren Namen ich jedoch bereits wieder vergessen habe. War jedenfalls gut und eine echte Alternative zum Käsefondue. (Das heisst aber nicht, dass die Kleider weniger nach Käse stinken. :) )
Zu meiner Überraschung konnte ich diese Woche sogar mal wieder ein wenig raus. Fotos machen mit Rico (oder mindestens die ganze Zeit dreinreden, was für Fotos gemacht werden sollen ;) ) war angesagt. Wiedermal eine dieser Feuerwehrübungen. Zum Glück hat das Wetter am Dienstag sogar noch in einem Anflug von Mitleid mitgespielt. War zwar nicht perfekt, aber besser als Hochnebel und Regen. Nur ein wenig Dunst, ganz passabel. Das Ganze ist für ein regionalisiertes 1to1-Inserat der Städtischen Werke. Das beste daran war wohl das Fahrerlebnis in einem Fiat Punto fast 2 Tage auf sämtlichen möglichen Strassenbelägen und -konditionen die Bodenhaftung zu testen :) . Zwischendurch noch an einen im letzten Moment gestoppten potentiellen Vollbrand gestossen.. War echt was los.

Interessant, was es alles für genoxiges Zeug gibt. Ein Avatar benennt nach mir, die “Pioniere in Sachen oxiditavem Stress”, wahlweise gibt es mich in 10mg und 20mg Dosen, eine mittlerweile Konkurse Compi-Bude aus Zürich (hehehe ..) .. spannend.
Oder: wie man das Mittelmass bekämpft. Autor: Armin Reins. In Die Mörderfackel werden mittelmässige Anzeigen von Werbetextern auseinandergenommen. Soweit ziemlich amüsant. Kritisieren ist zwar ganz spannend (und macht einen Heidenspass :) ), aber ob man’s dann besser machen kann .. Keine Angst. Jeweils 3 Texter präsentieren neben einer kritischen Betrachtung noch ein “So hätt ich’s gemacht!”-Beispiel. Es scheint klar zu sein, dass bei den meisten vorgestellten (ähem ..) Anzeigen die ursprüngliche Idee wohl ganz anders ausgesehen haben muss. Aber eben, wer’s allen recht machen muss, kann nicht erwarten, dass das Resultat von irgendjemandem speziell beachtet werden wird.
Eigentlich nicht verwunderlich: was als “Befreiung aus einer Diktatur” betitelt und als “Demokratisierung” verkauft wurde, ist noch lange nicht vorbei. Afghanistan, nach langer Zeit wiedereinmal in den Schlagzeilen, muss in einer paradoxen Situation geführt werden. Zum einen gilt die - durch Bedingungen der westlichen “Befreier” - festgelegte Staatsform einer Republik nach westlichem Vorbild, zum anderen parallel dazu die Scharia. Dass sich nach Menschenrecht definierte Religionsfreiheit und Scharia in einigen Punkten ziemlich grossflächig in die Quere kommen, scheint den Initianten nicht wirklich klar gewesen zu sein.
Heute habe ich ein wirklich interessantes Album gefunden: Alarm Will Sound plays Aphex Twin. Klassische Interpretationen von Aphex Twin Tunes. Hammer! Ein muss für jeden Aphex Twin Liebhaber. Logon Rock Witch ist ja im Original schon einigermassen “analog” .. Mit echten Streichern aber 10 mal besser :). In diesem Blog hier gibts noch mehr Infos zu Alarm Will Sound.
Das flexible Projektmanagement Tool Achievo ist seit letzter Woche in Version 1.2 (release candidate 1) verfügbar. Das Theme zur neuen Version aus dem Hause genox ist in der Mache. Der erste Migrationsversuch von 1.1 verlief problemlos, es empfiehlt sich jedoch das changelog genau zu lesen (Änderungen an den security profiles). Bin gespannt auf die final version.
Eine schleichende Kreativdepression macht sich breit. Seit zwei Monaten habe ich nur noch PHP und HTML Code gesehen, geschweifte Klammer auf und zu, SELECT * FROM ..
Ein wirklich nettes Tool um die (riesige ;) ) iTunes Musik Bibliothek zu browsen. Und zwar nach Covers. Im Moment gibts nur ein Tech-Demo, welches am 31. März die Funktion aufgeben wird. Eine ziemlich nette Alternative zu Frontrow (welches ich zwar immernoch nicht getestet habe), vorallem aber ein wenig eyecandy um die armen Windows-User neidisch zu machen. :) CoverFlow Website
Alle Jahre wieder: Einmal lass ich’s so richtig krachen und strapaziere mein Kreditkartenlimit mit einer Einkaufstour auf amazon.de. Nachdem ich letztes Jahr nicht wirklich viel Geld für solche Spässe übrig hatte, konnte ich nun ein paar meiner Wunschlisten-Objekte endlich kaufen. “Neubau Welt” ist zwar im Moment ausverkauft. Schade. Das Review im letzten PAGE sowie die Rezensionen sind sehr vielversprechend. Aber das hat ja noch Zeit..

i’m really getting tired of all that. i don’t really notice it anymore. my brain’s content filter is tagging every information containing something about terrorists, hi-jacking subgroups of islamistic extremist associations etc. as spam.
probably one of the more interesting things is to check for your realname or nickname on google and google image search. depending on your past internet activities, the results may frighten you. but it’s a good way to waste time. 8/10 points for this one. reading all kinds of news is the second most valuable time-waster. at least for me. i can easily spend half an hour reading news on all kinds of newsportals. 6/10.
okay .. forget about PNG’s and IE. honestly, just don’t do it. it’s the easiest way. try to avoid it whenever you possibly can. if you really need transparent PNG for your website layout, make a workaround css file, check for the browser with php and load the file with url()-links to PNG8 (only 1bit alpha) or GIF files. mention on your site that people should get a real browser to enjoy the full quality of your site. make a special entry page for ie users telling them to download firefox. there’s no way around that!
i developed an idea together with rico from fotodesign.org. depending on how his school activities are going to evolve, we will eventually form some sort of creative forum on every friday afternoon in some locations around solothurn. the main goal is certainly knowledge transfer (“from and for autolearners”). discussions on topics like user friendlyness, graphic design, web applications, idea development, business rumours and so on. i will surely post some news if it is going to take place somewhen. you can drop me a comment if you would be interested in joining up for the socialising part. i will then inform you if we’re going to start, who, when and where.
a nice tool to grab cover art from amazon(.co.uk/.com/.de/.jp): clutter. finds most covers from major label releases and adds it to all the album tracks with just a single click. too bad it doesn’t find every album. also working but a bit more complicated (and using the same resources afaik): Fetch Art. another approach: “search slothradio”. finds more covers but is a lot more complicated to use. i use clutter and if there’s no hit, “search slothradio” to get my covers.
i’m bored. completely. i wasn’t able to write one single line of code today because our hosting company has a major breakdown. since today, 9am, we’re unable to connect to all our customers www servers. i guess i won’t be able to sleep because i actually don’t have a single database backup. so if they’re storage servers are dead and the backups are not working, i’m pretty much .. fucked. :)
i now tested the following tools, some of them together with my boss and my coworker: PHProjekt, eGroupWare, Group-Office, dotProject, openPSA, webCollab, netOffice, phpGroupware and Achievo. there is no really feature balanced solution around which has good project management approaches and a working implementation of a stable reporting module (except for openPSA, this one is rather massive in all aspects. suddenly it requires midgaard application server to run as apache module. too bad i kicked that bsd server last month ..).
new year, new luck. despite the fact, that all this rumble is just because of a calendar system implemented some hundreds of years ago.. it’s still a good opportunity to get a major hangover on the following day. and that was something i didn’t had this strong since a long time .. wooha.
i now spent 2 full days trying out phprojekt and dotproject. eGroupWare is not in the race anymore, since i can’t manage to install the new RC5 of version 1.2. unfortunately, the 1.x.x versions aren’t available to download anymore.
i took the shoutbox feature offline. the box literally gets filled with spam every night and i’m tired of working my way thru the database table to clean up all “phentermine product informations” every morning. bloody spammers..
theoretically, we planned to switch to a new gw solution by the end of this year. this would be in 2 days if i do that math correctly. well, i guess i wont make it until february, despite the fact that all users need to get the handling straight before we start to professionalize on that sector aswell. the funny thing about deadlines is … you know that story. :)
our companys image archive is now on about 50’000 pictures. everthing is archived in a somewhat freestyle manner, so we really need a solution that makes it easy to handle pictures with keywords, categories et all. first thing i did was to google around for about 5 hours yesterday evening. there’s plenty of image archive solutions out there, but regarding most reviews and user comments, there are 4 “big players” amongst them.
the last piece of hardware in my gamer’s collection: a nintendo ds. i was playing advance wars for about 4 hours today. it’s a nice break from all those first person shooters and “woah we need more polygons!”-games. back to sprites and cutie wootie graphics! time to sell the gameboy advance and wait for the copystation to arrive. hehe.. :) it’s rather huge compared to my GBA sp, about three times as wide. it’s not quite that ergonomic, in fact you have to choose your gaming position wisely to avoid heavy arms. but on the other hand, you have 2 screens (one touchscreen) and wifi.
some would call it holidays, some would call it school - i think it’s more holidays than school at the moment. :) or maybe that’s just because i like the stuff we are doing very much. i’m spending one week in st. gallen. 5 days of school in a row. thanks to sam i don’t have to travel 20 hours this week, spending the nights in his living room. didn’t had the chance to hop around the city so far. even tho the school isn’t really tough, it’s still kinda exhausting, menthally at least. the goal of this week is to receive a minimal approach to drawing - scribbling, to be more precise. since minimalism is anyways what i like best, the stuff suits me very well. the random factor is also quite interesting (minimalism with a touch of randomness: well, what could be better for me?!). i will hopefully be able to upload some pictures by the end of this week.
i reinstalled the whole gallery stuff. now running: gallery2 rc1. i have to say, it’s much more comfortable than gallery1 but there seem to be some small bugs in the display core.. but hey, nobody’s perfect. ;) i also added the long overdue breakpoint 2005 album. have a look at it.
do you know this feeling when you finish work and realize that today, you actually did more on this certain project than there was going on in the last 4 months? - well, today was one of those rare but very powerful and motivating days. i started rather late at 10am, went to the office where i met mister bachmann, our fellow 3D and film cutting freelancer. we spent working together on this projectdefinitions and budget stuff for about 5-6 hours, afterwards a meeting with the client and finally some decisions after 6 months of “uh, who knows what’s actually going on ya??”. this stuff makes my day and it was very cool working together with those.
world of warcraft is a cool game. nothing about that. but what really pisses me off is the fact, that almost everytime i say to myself “let’s do a wow-session”, there’s something wrong with a server. either the authentification server doesn’t authenticate me or i get kicked out in the middle of a game, either connection loss or the game crashes. oh and what is also very cool.. the form you can submit your crash to blizzard can’t connect to their server.
netzklang, the project i worked on with several people is now officially dead because of various reasons. since we already have a homepage for it, we think about using it to promote our own netlabel stuff and maybe add some small broadcast of creative commons music. some small number of channels. nothing fixed yet.
hmm .. i’d really love to have a pantone color survival kit. all guides in a stylish leather box. just need a glass of single malt whiskey and a cigar while browsing my colors .. and an office chair which doesn’t lose screws every now and then. hmm.

Turning 40. Things went by much quicker than I expected. Here’s an attempt to put into words what
shifted along the way — what I gained, what I lost, and what I stopped caring about entirely.
Funnily enough (or sadly, depends on your type of humour), in all the projects I worked on, the
decision to go with Angular was rarely driven by hands-on frontend experience. It was usually made
from a C-level perspective — prioritising perceived safety and enterprise credibility over
developer ergonomics.
I was involved in the R&D of NEEO right from the start. It was a good time — until it wasn’t.
Since I left the company about two or three years in, I’ve often wondered what could have been if
we had done things differently. This is a postmortem. And maybe a way for me to finally put this
behind me.
The docs tell me it’s directly related to the episode I had in spring, where I spent 2 weeks in
hospital due to a hematolysis. Apparently, during a hematolysis, the liver works overtime to get
rid of all the dead blood cells, thus creating a lot of waste material that is subsequently stored
as gall in the gall bladder. The chemical composition is out of balance though, causing stones
(salts) to form there in. If those stones decide to move, that’s when you start to feel pain.
I’ve ran a few E-Commerce projects in the past. Mostly small business online stores using stacks
like Drupal Commerce and other PHP based cart solutions. Things always got a bit tacky when trying
to match the UI/UX of the cart solution to existing CMS based websites though. At some point,
customisations just got too complicated and intrusive and - which is important in the segment I’m
floating in - too costly: spending a lot of money to match two different platforms.
There’s a new kind of minimalist movement sprouting, trying to make websites as small as possible.
Well - “new” - taking into account, that their approach is basically to make websites like we used
to make them in 2001 .. this can hardly be considered “new”. But anyways, I was trying to see how
large a couple of mainstream websites are on their first pageload and how that translates into a
rough estimate in terms of transferred assets and loading time.
It feels quite surreal to look back. It’s been only a few months but with everything happening
since, feels like a year. The world changed dramatically since.
About 2 years ago I started a bit of an odyssee to find a convenient, affordable and production
ready way to deploy my web application stack. My goal was to make it viable by the above criteria,
especially to have a stack/product in a segment that would normally end up on a shared webhost
with clients that are used to shared webhosting pricing.
Some prints turn out great, some fail completely and most aren’t really practically useful ;-).
The key “fix” above is the only print we’ve made so far that actually has a functional aspect to
it. I have to admit, most of the prints are just for fun. But it’s immensely satisfying to fix
even a bloody mailbox key.
Roughly 2 months ago I noticed that one of the EPs I released on Enough
Records showed up on Spotify. Turns out it was pushed to
Spotify and YouTube via routenote.com on behalf of Enough. I got in
touch with PS/Enough to find out more and we ended up putting together an Album made of two EPs,
both of whom weren’t broadly publicly released. There’s no new tracks but I still find it funny to
have my stuff visible on Spotify. :-)
I wanted to bring back comments for my blog articles for a while now. The downside of using a
headless CMS is to some extent, that there are mostly no batteries included. Most headless systems
are pretty unspecific and versatile, which is nice in so many ways. But pretty time consuming in
others. I could have modelled a comment system on sanity.io, hooked up some endpoints on my
Express and all of that jazz but decided against it. It just gets too complex, way too quickly.
And I really don’t feel like re-inventing the wheel, once again.
I was using Adobe software since I first got a (cough not entirely legal cough) version of
Photoshop about 20 years ago. When I started my own business, I bought licences for Creative Suite
and switched over to the subscription model as soon as it was introduced. Since my daily business
shifted to being very screen-centric and print became a side effect of sorts, I was tossing around
the idea of quitting Adobe software for quite a while. Since my renewal was up by December 2019, I
ended up cancelling. To be honest, it felt weird.
GitLab offers free shared runners (with a quota) to run your CI pipelines. This is extremeley
generous and I’ve come to depend heavily on using them for my projects. Combined with their free
tier, I don’t see a reason to not use GitLab. I haven’t paid a single dime for one year, things
are stable and there’s only little down time on the shared runner pool.
The climate. We love talking about it, don’t we. We can spend multiple news cycles analysing
someone’s remarks about wether or not climate change is real, while we have proof right at our
doorsteps. Or, lately, wether the situation is man-made or not. Seems like we accepted the fact
that the bowl is broken after a decade of looking at it, falling down from the table in slow
motion.
Well we are there again. Tons of features you’re dying to use but a certain platform, the one your
client insists you absolutely HAVE to support (“the CEO is using IE11, so..”), does not support
them. I have been playing this game since IE6 first got the heat and history is repeating itself
in a strange fashion with the stuff coming from Redmond.
Visual Studio Code has come a long way since I first started to
use it in early 2017. It’s fast and responsive, I can style it to my convenience (e.g. font sizes
in the drawer etc). And it supports almost everything I need on a daily basis: TS, styled
components, Angular, React, a bit of PHP now and then. But there’s some things that are tickling
my nerves big time:
I’ve had the opportunity to dive into React quite extensively for the past two months. Large
project. Many, many components. Rather complicated setup on the backend, including a Python CMS
which hydrates the SPA, in many different ways, including acting as a REST intermediary service
for some other 3rd party APIs.
Cleaning up my digital footprint allowed me to revisit a lot of services I have used in the past
and basically just forgot about in the last 7-8 years. In the process, I realised how fragmented
the internet is. How much content is there, outdated, sitting on a bleak corner of the web on a
service that once thrived and has been superseded by “the next cool thing”?
I am going to delete all my social media accounts in the next few days. Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn, Google+ and so forth. Was thinking long and hard about this, but it’s the best way
forward. I could just delete all the apps first, but hell, why bother. Time to cut the middle man
and continuing defragmentation. Or to put it in more elaborate terms: bye bye bitches. Hehe.
This early access game was on sale on steam after I noticed that Dungeon Keeper 1 was for free on
Origin. DK1 is great in so many ways, I played it for a few hours (320x240 or so, ugh) and decided
to look around again for a “real spiritual successor”.
I’ve spent a lot of time making music (or noise) in the past 18 years and I noticed a sort of
inevitable progression that ended in the inevitable lack of inspiration for me.
Two years passed without me writing a single line on this blog. Not that I care too much, but .. So maybe you’ve heard (probably) but I co-founded a startup called NEEO with a friend somewhere in between and this is what kept me busy for the most part. Happy Robot Graphics is officially being retired and I just hope this other thing succeeds.
It seems like some kind of holy quest to find a viable solution for multicolumn content in WYSIWYG editors without annoying your users too much - but at the same time provide a solution which is technically maintainable and doesn’t put too much markup inside WYSIWYG fields. Quite the masochistic idea..
Probably the worst developer experience in terms of e-commerce solutions I had so far was with Prestashop. Maybe it works for people using nothing but the default theme and replacing their logo. But anything a little more complicated than that results in a mess in one way or another.
I was playing around with CDN, a module for Drupal which provides everything necessary to run your own “poorman’s content delivery network”. However, in my case it’s not really a network of servers, just a simple and cheap way to circumvent some of the HTTP protocols limits of only allowing 2 concurrent connections per host.
A couple of weeks ago I was very optimistic about using Mollom as my primary anti-spam solution. However, I recently had a site where 14’000 comments were posted in a matter of 3 days, despite the fact that Mollom was enabled and should have prohibited exactly that.
I have to admit, I joined the party a little late. That’s mostly because I really didn’t have the need to go down the “feature-road” so far. There’s already tons of “features” floating around and most if not all Drupal distributions rely on this module for one or more .. snareroll .. features. :-)
I use this SCSS snippet in combination with Omega and Browserclass. It replaces the default logo of a Drupal theme with an SVG graphic file instead of serving hi-res bitmap images for retina displays. So you end up with 2 files instead of .. a dozen.
A quick Update regarding jQuery.Columnizer + Drupal 7: Good news everyone! As mentioned in the comments over here, jQuery.Columnizer recently got updated and now supports older versions of jQuery too. I switched the article display on this site to take advantage of columnizer and it works out of the box with the bundled jQuery version of Drupal 7. Fancy magazine layouts, here we come!
When working with small businesses, sometimes you come across very, very basic needs. Mostly based on very, very small budgets. One of those is a basic shopping cart, a no-thrills-solution which just provides a cart and a checkout, without any kind of payment back-end needs.
With the sheer amount of modules available for Drupal, it is sometimes a tedious task to find one to solve a specific shortcoming of Drupal core. This is another article in my ongoing series about the hidden gems in Drupal’s repository. This time, it’s all about Comments.
The amount of todo-list apps for iOS and OSX is large. But since 10.7, all you really need to get a more or less productive environment set-up for your one-man-show is already built into iOS and OSX: The Reminders app.
Drupal Anti-Spam: The Second Try: So, to make it quick and painless: You won’t get around an external spam service like Mollom or Akismet. I used every available option, but I wasn’t able to keep the spam at bay. Since I switched my sites back to Mollom, I had no more spam comments or form spam in general to deal with. The problem is: I also noticed at least 2-3 outages of the Mollom REST service. Oh well. To cite the Stones: “You can’t always get what you want.”
Mail.app on mac has a number of small but sometimes very annoying quirks which require third party plugins. For example, the well known winmail.dat problem or Outlook users not being able to open attachements. Beside that, there’s a couple of weird “design decisions” the development team took, like for example, if you write an HTML e-mail, the receiving client doesn’t display text formatting as you think it would. Instead, it just uses it’s default text styling, which in case of Outlook is Times New Roman, 12pt. In short: fugly. There’s workarounds for everything, but I just want to write mails for crying out loud.
Drupal currently flushes page cache on every CRON run. Eh? Looks like there’s a patch waiting in D7 to address this issue. I was quite surprised to find out about this behaviour over here while I was reasearching some other performance related things.
I was playing around with CSS3 multi-column lately, mainly on this blog, to see what’s possible and what’s not. Here’s my verdict: insanely cool in new browsers, but not production ready. Stick to DIVs for now. Here’s how to do exactly that with CKeditor.
With every new project that comes along, I try to optimize the UX of the content creation process of my Drupal base install. Mainly focusing on the content layout process and the means to add media and inline images. One very important part in the process is the WYSIWYG editor and it’s ability to play well with inserting images or allowing for easy linking of existing entity content on the site.
Installed an SSD as system disk in my hackintosh. Migration worked perfectly, speed is amazing. Regular harddiscs are an incredible bottleneck. :-P Before you buy a new Macbook (for example) upgrade the thing with an SSD HD. It might already provide enough speed.
BTW. The model I chose was the “OCZ Vertex 2″. Seemed to be the best one for OSX due to it’s lack of TRIM support on an OS level.
While Drupal provides a lot of extensions and gimmicks, one of the big downsides currently is image handling. Basic image handling, like inserting images into a node’s body field are quite the task to achieve – there’s plenty of approaches but almost all fail at some point. Mostly because of bugs or lack of basic features.
Basically, from the enduser point of view, a vanilla install of Drupal (stable/core) doesn’t provide any way of creating richtext content, including image embedding. Instead, there are like 7 different ways to do this. One of the things I would like to have changed in Drupal 7 is … While I’m typing this blog post in WordPress, I notice 2 things: first, I never had to worry a single second about WYSIWYG functionality. Second (and most important), media asset management and embedding options are already there, with all the gimmicks you can imagine. Or, to be more specific, with all the gimmicks you actually need.
I wish to see the same approach for Drupal. I don’t want to choose between 8 different richtext-editors, nor between 4 different approaches on inserting an image into text. I want to have TinyMCE in the Drupal core and a streamlined image handling using CCK/FileField: a) because CCK is moved to core and b) because Insert (formerly known as “FileField Insert”) does this thing with a few tweaks already and so far is the most promising approach to streamlined content creation and editing.
After all, it took me around half a year now to find an actually stable, easy to handle and overhead-less solution for this. Most of the functionality I’m currently using isn’t even marked “stable” yet, thus I’m taking a big risk for a feature which is considered “basic” from the enduser POV. Making content creation and media management easy is the whole point of a web content management system, isn’t it? Thus, I officially vote for a core solution for that! :-)
I previously wrote that ImageAssist is a nice solution for exactly that. There’s a number of problems with IA which made me switch to a simpler solution (FileField/Insert): a) it doesn’t support ImageAPI/ImageCache/CCK, which is becoming the new de-facto standard for filehandling with D7, b) avoid using unnecessary JS based UI functionality if you rely on a colorful selection of components, c) I ran into all sorts of basic styling problems and wasn’t able to find workarounds for most of them, d) the usability is a pain, e) buggy and slow release cycles, f) and that is a general rule: avoid anything which opens a popup-window and is a key component. :P Keep it simple stupid, please.
I am really really tempted to officially drop IE6/5.5/5 support and just show those browsers a big, huge “UPDATE NOW” image ASAP. I can’t tell you how very excited I am that it seems like IE6 is going to vanish probably during the next 6 months or so. Life is going to be so easy. Rainbows, hummingbirds, candy falling from the sky.. Ah.. and once again, knowledge to put away in the drawer. :P
I was trying to figure out how to create a simple way to keep my 15+ drupal installations clean and up to date with a single mouseclick for a long time now. Of course, drush was the first thing I looked at, but since it is a command line tool and all my clients are on shared hosting servers without ssh access, that didn’t seem quite the solution.
My first goal was to create an easy way to keep the codebase up to date with the rather frequently updated sources from drupal.org. My base install consists of around 68 modules, some of them get updated at least every two weeks. If you try to keep up with that on a regular base by overwriting/synching every install by hand, it will take you approximately 2 hours every week to do so, including clicking yourself thru each sites database update procedure. At first, I used an Automator action in combination with Transmit, an FTP client providing plugins to Automator for synching files. This was quite ok, but really slow. Slow because of Transmit, as I found out later.
So, long story short, I found the following procedure kinda solid enough for production websites. To be able to execute shell scripts on a webserver, PHP’s exec(); function needs to be allowed to run. Second, you need a fast and scriptable FTP client: I found Yummy FTP to be quite versatile and fast for synching. At least twice as fast as Transmit FTP. Also, since there will be the need for drush, you need that, too. :)

I previously introduced you to a list of my favourite plugins. Some time has passed and I am able to present to you an updated version of it. New plugins are marked with *, removed plugins are marked with † and the “swiss knife of modules” is marked with a +. Keep in mind that some of these modules are basically only libraries which provide functionality for other modules to work.
I listen to a lot of different music and thus there have been quite a number of tracks accumulated over the past 15 years. A wacky 22’146 tracks to date. Keeping this enjoyable on a file-system level is almost impossible. One of the first things I did when I switched to Mac 5 years ago was to start importing tracks into iTunes. It took me quite a while, but it was well spent and I’d never again use winamp or anything like it.
On this website, you can run a browser based “virtual machine” which loads IE 6/7/8, Firefox 2/3, Opera and Safari (all for Windows). Only problem: Requires Windows and IE to run. But still: quite handy if you don’t want to mess around with your installation of win/IE (in my case, the VM running on OSX :P) but still want to be able to view your websites in different browsers and be actually able to browse them.
I use the following plugins on every base installation, since it covers (most) of my client’s needs. The * indicates, that this is a plugin which is active on basically every installation. Also, I only run “real” CRON tasks via cPanel options – no virtual CRON triggers. Additionally, I have a test installation which is the only install to check for updates and has all plugins enabled to do so. This installation is also used for testing possible version conflicts between plugins (which, well, happens).
Welcome to the new WordPress-powered blog on genox.ch. As you may have noticed, there’s not much fancy layoutism around yet, but this is going to change over time. The switch from Serendipity to WordPress was something I planned to do since WP 2.8 got released. S9y is far from being actively developped anymore (I don’t blame anyone, it’s totally understandable that a project depending on 1 main developer is significantly going to struggle over time because ressources are very limited).
As for the potential looks of the new blog – it’s gonna be different. Dark times are over.

For all you people “getting old”: Twine is a way to collect, share and connect information, featuring some fancy web 3.0 technology. In a way, it’s like digg + delicious + semantic web functionality. I’m not gonna go deeper for now, if you’re interested, go have a look: What is Twine?
Now this took me about 2 days to figure. Most Epson printers don’t support any sort of PostScript printing. You will notice that once you try to print a page from Illustrator or InDesign: The printer-icon shows up in the dock, just to disappear 10 seconds later. Meanwhile, the printer makes a little rumba - but no printing whatsoever happens. The image printing quality is absolutely stunning and it would be a waste to not use this printer for proofing purpose. But this made me a little disappointed.

What’s the point in saying “I’m feeling good” if you know, that you are actually far from feeling “real” good? That, as soon as you stop taking those light meds, you can start all over again? We’re so damn good at lying to ourselfes, to the point where we actually believe. This includes lies from “I’m the best” to “I’m not worth a penny”. Bad luck, if you end up lying the wrong lies to yourself, one could say. Putting the process in reverse on the other hand.. well. The first thing you will realise: How things should be and how things actually are, from a rational point of view. And from that point on (if you really got it), you feel a sting in your brain’s frontal lobe, everytime you realise that what you’re thinking is actually “lying to yourself”. The abyss you try to avoid like cats avoid water. Basic instinct. Because you know that it will take you one hell of a struggle to get out again. It’s fascinating how simple and how complex this whole issue is, simultaneously. Or maybe I’m just a little bipolar on top of everything. But if it’s just that.. keep it coming. ;)

Buenzli is soon over, the pricegiving is being prepared as I write this. The last days have been very busy and I managed to enter 2 entries to the competitions, one piece of music and a wild demo (animation movie). Triztan and myself worked for the better part of a week on making a little more than a minute of animation. Altho I’m satisfied with the result (taking into account I used After Effects for the first time a little more than 3 weeks ago and never did any sort of compositing before..), it could have been longer. But I think it’s a good start, especially because now we have a rather stable workflow, tested and running. Let’s see what happens next. Talked to cosmic/nuance and we (triztan and myself) might pull off something together, new group, or so, dunno yet. We’ll see.

Koljas Flickr stream hat heute ein Update bekommen. Film Nummer 6 hat’s mittlerweile auch bis in die Schweiz und zu mir geschafft. Er ist zur Zeit wohl irgendwo in Georgien, genaueres weiss ich leider nicht. Soviel ich weiss, geht es ihm jedoch gut.
Apples iCal kann Kalender auf 2 Arten veröffentlichen: Auf einen .mac Account oder einen “privaten Webserver”. Bei letzerem muss es sich jedoch um einen WebDAV-Server handeln. Das geht zwar - irgendwie - mit einem PHP PEAR Package, aber ich habe ehrlich gesagt keine Lust das selbst zu coden. Mit diesen beiden Varianten erhält man jedoch keine bidirektionalen Synchronisationsmöglichkeiten, als Groupware-Kalender kann man das nicht oder nur bedingt brauchen. Apple hat vor geraumer Zeit ihren iCal-Server als OpenSource Version veröffentlicht - nur leider braucht das wiederum ein bisschen mehr als Shared Hosting bei cyon. Dasselbe gilt für die restlichen iCal/CalDAV Server Projekte, ohne mindestens ein Dedicated Hosting geht da nix (Python, Apache Module, host-file Einträge, ..).
OpenOffice hat kürzlich die erste Beta der Version 3 veröffentlicht. Das interessante an der Sache für Mac user ist, dass die neue OO-Version nun nicht mehr X11 benötigt. Das war der Grund für mich zuerst auf NeoOffice zu wechseln, da die X11 Version nicht wahnsinnig performant lief. Auch im Vergleich zu Office 2008 für Mac von Microsoft ist die OpenOffice 3 Beta schneller, stabiler und braucht weitaus weniger Ressourcen. Vielen Dank!
Vor knapp 2 Monaten habe ich mir einen E-Book-Reader von Sony gekauft. Nachdem ich in der Zwischenzeit wohl um die 1’200 Seiten gelesen habe, lohnt es sich einmal eine Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen. Grundsätzlich finde ich den Reader sehr gut, der Text auf dem Display ist extrem angenehm zu Lesen und seit ich den Reader habe, lese ich ca. 3 mal soviel. Die Probleme, die sich mir gestellt haben, gehen grundsätzlich auch nicht in Richtung Hardware. Die funktioniert wirklich toll.

Ist eine Weile her, seit ich das letzte Mal meinen Nicecast Streamserver am Laufen hatte. Da ich nun meistens zu Hause arbeite, läuft wieder mehr Sound und jeder Interessierte kann sich in meinen “Bürostream” hängen. Am besten geht das mit einem Klick auf diesen Link: Radio Genox.
Das All ist wunderschön und ich würde alles dafür geben, ein Spektakel wie dieses einmal mit blossem Auge zu sehen. Vielleicht ein Grund dafür, weshalb ich fast 2 Jahre lang täglich EVE Online gespielt habe. Sight seeing im All wäre der absolute Hammer, aber wohl leider nicht mehr während meiner kurzen Existenz.
Wirklich sehr beeindruckend, dieses Plugin (VST/RTAS/AU) eröffnet völlig neue Möglichkeiten. Auf der Webseite hat es ein paar Flash-Videos, die ihr euch unbedingt ansehen müsst. Ich kann mir sehr gut vorstellen, damit zu arbeiten. Hier liegen noch 10GB Samples rum, die ich meistens nicht verwenden kann, da ich in einer anderen Tonart editiere als dass Sample Material. Aber scheinbar kann man das jetzt ganz einfach beheben. Mein Mund stand wirklich für 10s offen, das ist so etwas, wovon ich bis jetzt ab und zu geträumt habe. :-)
Gestern Abend war die grosse Gala des Best of Swiss Web und siehe da: Die Cmsbox Jungs gewinnen den Master! Wenn das nicht geil ist. :-) Gratulation aus dem Hause genox!
Diese Woche am Mittwoch war ich in Basel um Patrick (vIbe) zu treffen, den ich seit fast 10 Jahren nicht mehr “in real life” getroffen habe. Wir hatten damals zusammen eine Demogroup gegründet (“Phaze:Shipht”) und hatten sogar 1-2 Demos veröffentlicht. Aber das war’s dann auch schon. Dann brach der Kontakt zwischen den Membern ab und alle sind ihre Wege gegangen. Was aus Slater, Wombat und Zodi geworden ist, kann ich nur erahnen. Wombat war glaube ich sogar einmal an einer Buenzli, aber er hat mich wohl nicht wiedererkannt. Respektive, ich habe ihn wohl auch nicht erkannt. Das ist zwar auch kein Wunder, zumal wir alle damals mehr oder weniger pubertierende Jung-Nerds gewesen sind.
Das hat nun wohl wirklich niemand erwartet: Das neue NIN-Album “Ghosts I-IV” ist als Torrent verfügbar und zwar ganz legal unter einer Creative Commons-Lizenz. Das ist wirklich sehr cool. Genauer gesagt ist nur der erste Teil der 36 Tracks starken Collection als Torrent freigegeben. Den restlichen Teil kann man auf der offiziellen NIN-Website für 5$ kaufen. Beim momentanen Dollar-Kurs .. Oh momma! :)
Das ist mit Abstand die umfangreichste Sammlung mit CSS Bugs für IE6 (aber auch weiteren Browsern), die ich bis jetzt gefunden habe. Hat schon ein bisschen diggen gebraucht, deshalb möchte ich euch das nicht vorenthalten:

Jaaaa, es gibt etwas gratis!! Native Instruments hat ihren KorePlayer gratis zum Download freigegeben. Man kann sich eine Seriennummer und den Downloadlink auf der Webseite von NI besorgen. Das Ganze gibt’s als Mac und Windows Download.
NI will wohl den Absatz der Samplepacks ein wenig pushen, deshalb gibt’s den Player mal gratis als Zückerchen. Dann wollen wir mal schauen, was das Teil so kann.
Das Phänomen ist logischerweise älter als das Internet, nur war es nicht so ganz einfach zu trollen, als man der Person noch gerade in die Augen schauen musste, während man sich von seinem geistlosen Brei entledigte. Ich habe meine liebe Mühe mit solchen Leuten, denn ich verstehe einfach nicht, was es denn nun Gutes bringen soll. Sich mitteilen in Form von Beleidigungen und Anspielungen unter der Gürtellinie ist nun wirklich das Allerletzte. Zum Glück bin ich nicht so wahnsinnig populär als dass ich damit täglich zu kämpfen hätte, habe aber auch schon meine Erfahrungen damit gemacht in den letzten 2 Jahren.
CoverSutra ist ein kleines Tool zum Steuern von iTunes: Transportfunktionen, Bewertung, etc. Last.fm scrobbler und eine Suchfunktion, welche ähnlich wie Spotlight funktioniert, sind auch gleich integriert. Kann ich also nur empfehlen. Das einzige Problem ist, dass sich das Tool von Zeit zu Zeit beendet, ohne Fehlermeldung und nichts. Aber das wird sicher bald gefixt.
Thomas hat mir den Link diese Woche geschickt und ich finde es eine gute Sache. Auf macheist.com bekommt man für $49 ein paar ganz nette OSX Tools und der Erlös der Aktion geht vollumfänglich an verschiedene gemeinnützige Organisationen. Die Aktion dauert aber nur noch wenige Stunden.
Seit gestern ist die neue Webseite vom mediagenerator online. Wenn ihr die Seite besucht, werdet ihr feststellen, dass es ein paar elementare Änderungen gegeben hat: Ein neues Logo, ein neues CMS (Cmsbox) und vieles mehr. Eine weitere elementare Änderung in diesem Zusamenhang: Ich werde meine Dienstleistungen in Sachen Grafik / Webdesign in Zukunft nur noch via mediagenerator anbieten. Es handelt sich dabei aber um keine Firma sondern um eine Bürogemeinschaft zwischen Daniel Bachmann (aka. triztan/vantage) und mir.
VoodooPad ist eine kleine (gratis) Applikation für OSX mit welcher man - kurz gesagt - ein oder mehrere Wiki-artige Dokumente auf dem lokalen Rechner erstellen und pflegen kann. Ideal um Ideen festzuhalten, kleine Informationsbrocken zu speichern, Todolists zu führen oder mal kurz etwas scribbeln währenddem man an der Strippe hängt. Sehr praktisch!
OS X und Apple sind ja toll, aber sowas gibt einem schon zu denken. Im OS X Wörterbuch ist das Wort “Portfolio” scheinbar nicht enthalten. Dafür wird einem von der Korrekturhilfe “Pornofilm” als beste Option angeboten. Portfolio/Pornofilm .. Naja. :-) Zur Auswahl stehen auch “Postfolio”, “Wortfolio” und “Portofolio”. Was zum Geier?
Heute kam was ganz tolles mit der Post: LINEA, vom deutsch-spanischen Designer Gabriel Kornreich. Ultimativ simpel, aber mein Nacken dankt es mir bereits nach ein paar Stunden. Der Herr Kornreich macht die Laptopständer übrigends in seiner Küche von Hand.
Kimai ist eine Opensource Timetracking-Suite in PHP mit MySQL. Sieht noch ganz nett aus und wird auch fleissig weiterentwickelt, im Gegensatz zu achievo. Im Vergleich zu den erst kuerzlich hier angesprochenen Alternativen (sidejobtrack, appmite) sind wir hierbei auch nicht auf einem fremden Server sondern haben alle Daten auf unserem eigenen Server. Ich habe mir das nochmals ueberlegt und irgendwie macht es mich doch ein wenig nachdenklich alle diese Daten ‘irgendwo’ zu lagern. Dann schon lieber auf meinem eigenen Server, auch wenn ich halt selber mal patchen muss.

Die cmsbox website ist online und sieht doch ganz schnuckelig aus, oder was meint ihr? - Das Design kommt aus dem Hause genox, der Inhalt vom cmsbox-Marketing Team. Die Umsetzung (CSS etc.) hat Simon Raess mit höchster Präzision ( =D ) erledigt. In naher Zukunft werden auch ein paar andere ganz nette Gadgets die Hallen der cmsbox Developers in Bern verlassen. Man darf also gespannt sein.

Ironic Sans hat einen Artikel geschrieben in welchem er ein paar Logos von Terroristenorganisationen zusammengestellt hat. Ich find das noch ganz interessant, rein vom gestalterischen Standpunkt her. Natürlich gibts hunderte Idioten welche die ganze Wirkung nicht ausblenden können und mal einfach drauflos bashen.. Aber ist halt auch ein gefährliches Thema. Naja was solls, trotzdem interessant =).
Sodeli!! Der gröbste “Rush” ist vorbei und in 3 Tagen setze ich mich für 1.5 Monate ab nach Toronto um Ahoo zu besuchen. Ich wünsche euch einen schönen Sommer, vielleicht schreibe ich von Zeit zu Zeit mal etwas im Blog. Ohne Arbeit werde ich wohl drüben auch nicht durchkommen, deshalb ist die Absenz vorwiegend virtuell. Sonst könnt ich ja gar nicht 1.5 Monate einfach so abhauen. So gut geht’s denn auch wieder nicht! hehe..
Funeral-mood is very odd. One of the few occasions where words are mostly in the wrong place. The “zone” is in between sadness, hope and believing. They always pull me down to earth. Grounding. Oh well. In the recent case, the funeral was a relief, because the person was in a very bad shape, healthwise - a relief from suffering. I didn’t knew him that well, but I know his son - and the son of this son. And everyone around those, basically.

Nun, ich habe nie erwartet, dass sich das Ganze zu einem internationalen Fall entwickeln könnte. In letzter Zeit passieren jedoch schon sehr, sehr interessante Dinge. Und wenn man ein wenig mit google spielt, findet man die interessantesten Sachen ..
..habe ich mich gestern Vormittag gefragt. Bis jetzt war ich mit Azureus eigentlich ganz zufrieden, jedenfalls unter Windows. Unter OSX auf meinem “alten” G4 Powerbook verspeist der ganze Java-Unterbau von Azureus jedoch viel zu viel Ressourcen, CPU und Memory gleichermassen.
Wie wir alle ja mittlerweile wissen, ist IE 7 schon eine Weile draussen. Die Zugriffsstatistiken auf meine Website sind aber der Meinung, dass erst um die 10% der Views via IE 7 abgerufen werden. Das heisst … weiterhin Workarounds bauen für IE 6. Vorallem wenn es um die Darstellung transparenter PNG’s geht, was jeder state-of-the-art-Browser problemlos hinbekommt, ausser natürlich IE 6.. das Problem ist auch nicht neu, es gibt massenweise Workarounds. Hier mal die 2 praktischsten Lösungsansätze, die mir in den letzten paar Jahren immer wieder geholfen haben:
Pilze sammeln
Der Titel passt zu diesem Blog-Eintrag wie die ganze Story in das Weltbild eines rational denkenden Menschen: gar nicht. Denn die unendliche Geschichte geht weiter: Nach einer relativ ruhigen Phase (vielen Dank, wenigstens haben Sie mir meinen Toronto-Urlaub gegönnt, Herr Zumstein) ist der Chef der “grössten Agentur in Grenchen” wiedermal unterwegs und da ihm das Material ausgegangen ist, hat er mich sogar einmal auf der Front als Feature untergebracht. Scheinbar ist bis heute der Unterschied zwischen Blog und Newsportal noch nicht so ganz klar geworden.. Auch, dass diese “Medienplattform” keine “Medienplattform” ist, sondern ein Platz wo ich meine privaten Gedanken veröffentliche, für meine Kollegen und lieben Bekannten. Das schliesst Sie schon einmal aus, Herr Zumstein.
Neue Bilder auf flickr / Spital: Wiedermal!

Nun bin ich seit knapp einer Woche 25 Jahre jung. Nochmals vielen Dank an alle Gratulierenden, war wirklich sehr nett. Ich habe keine riesige Feier geschmissen, nur im kleinen Kreise gemütlich gegessen und getrunken. Und was gibts sonst noch Neues zu berichten? - Zur Zeit läuft alles gut, ich habe eigentlich (ausnahmsweise :) ) gar nichts zu motzen. Gibt’s gar nicht, oder?!
Was passieren würde, wenn Microsoft das iPod-Packaging gemacht hätte, kann man sich hier reinziehen. Witzig und abgrundtief ehrlich. Gefunden via ad.freak.
Diesen Trip zu machen war wohl eine meiner besten Entscheidungen der letzten 10 Jahre. Ich habe einige sehr wichtige Erfahrungen machen können. Mehr kann ich dazu eigentlich nicht sagen. Was den Tourismus-Teil angeht, Toronto ist eine relativ grosse Stadt mit einer interessanten Downtown. Ahoo und ich sind oft planlos zwischen den Wolkenkratzern hin und her gelaufen, ein Gefühl welches ich sehr vermisse. Und das nicht nur wegen den Wolkenkratzern. Ich fühle mich sehr wohl zwischen endlos hohen Häusertürmen. Ich glaube jedoch, dass dafür nicht unbedingt die Architektur verantwortlich war, sondern meine ständige Begleiterin. Ehrlich gesagt war mir der touristische Teil relativ egal, ich bin ja auch nicht nach Kanada geflogen um mir Sehenswürdigkeiten anzuschauen. Abgesehen vom üblichen “Es ist halt alles ein wenig grösser dimensioniert als in der Schweiz”-Quervergleich ist mir eigentlich auch nicht viel aufgefallen. Mein Fokus war hauptsächlich auf eine Person gerichtet und nicht auf die Stadt oder die Leute, wobei ich es sehr genossen habe, diese Eindrücke auf mich wirken zu lassen.
Was für eine Woche. Nachdem ich mehr oder weniger alle noch offenen Sachen erledigt habe, kann ich mich ausgiebig auf meine Ferien freuen, die restlichen Socken falten und meinen Rucksack packen. Das Ticket für den Flug nach Toronto liegt nun schon länger als einen Monat auf meinem Schreibtisch und nach Adam Riese sind es jetzt genau noch 2 Tage. Ja, in 48h bin ich in 10km Höhe über dem Nordatlantik! Bloody Hell! =D Mit jeder weiteren vorbeigezogenen Stunde fühle ich mich ein wenig entspannter, fast wie beim Trip nach NYC. Nur diesesmal aus einem etwas anderen, schwer zu umschreibenden Grund. :)
Die unendliche Geschichte
Ich fühle mich geehrt.
Ach, ja. Wie schön. Danke, Welt, für all diese schrägen Leute. Heute gabs Post von niemand anderem als dem rechtschaffenden Journalisten. Intellektuelle Konstrukte sind doch etwas tolles. Nur sollte man sie auch ansatzweise Verstehen, bevor man irgendwelchen Bullshit erzählt. Wieso er mich nicht auch gleich für eine Konventionalstrafe von 50’000 verpflichten will ist mir ein Rätsel.
Unheilige Verschwörungen…
Das schlimmste daran ist, dass es scheinbar keine rechtlichen Mittel gibt um jemanden, dessen Sinn für Realität komplett degeneriert ist, verbal ruhig zu stellen. Noch viel schlimmer finde ich, dass solche Personen sogar Gerichtskosten verursachen könnten, für welche der Steuerzahler aufkommen muss. Und fast schon ein wenig ängstlich stimmt mich der Gedanke, dass solche Leute durch den mangelnden Überblick ihrer Beschützer auch noch Recht bekommen könnten. Das lässt wirklich kleine Zweifel am System entstehen..
Firmenverzeichnisse
Es spielt sich ein interessanter Trend ab. Jedenfalls für alle Unternehmen, die sich irgendwann - irgendwie - aus irgendeinem Grund einmal ins WIR-Verzeichnis eingetragen haben. Seit ca. 2-3 Wochen häufen sich die Mitteilungen über neu gegründete Firmenverzeichnisse für das lokale Gewerbe in der Region/Nation (come on, die Schweiz ist so klein, das geht doch alles noch unter “regionale Verzeichnisse”… :P ). Ich meine, der business case ist jetzt wirklich nichts Neues. Absolut nicht. Bin nur ich das oder ist im Moment wieder ein wenig Aufbruchstimmung im “1001 useless directory indexes”-Internet? :-)

samuz media vs. pgm medien
Also, jetzt kann ichs mir nicht mehr verkneifen. SAMUZ Media verklagt unseren Redakteur. Er scheint irgendwie alle zu verklagen, die nicht seiner Meinung sind. Ist das normal? Man lese sich kurz durch seine Artikel und man stellt fest: das kanns einfach nicht sein.
Heute war es an der Zeit eine Pause zu machen. Diese Woche hat ihre Spuren hinterlassen, ich bin ein wenig ausgeschossen. Ich hab wiedermal meine Kamera vorgekramt und bin in der Abenddämmerung losgezogen um ein paar nette Fotos zu machen. Achja, es gab auch wiedermal ein paar neue Bilder für die Headerimg-Rotation.
Die erste PR-Aktion der buenz.li an einer LAN-Party war ein Erfolg in vielerlei Hinsicht. Die AirPlane mit 1’100 Teilnehmern bot uns eine interessante Plattform um die Demoscene zu promoten. Die LAN-Party fand im Eventdock des Flughafens in Kloten statt, füllte sogleich auch das ganze Dock. Eine ziemlich geile Location.
Von gestern auf heute war ich bei Kolja und Julia in St. Croix (hier). Kolja hat mir die “Stadt” gezeigt und wir sind noch ein wenig gewandert. Ja, gemütlich ists allemal dort oben. Zum Abendessen gabs eine lokale Käsespezialität, deren Namen ich jedoch bereits wieder vergessen habe. War jedenfalls gut und eine echte Alternative zum Käsefondue. (Das heisst aber nicht, dass die Kleider weniger nach Käse stinken. :) )
Zu meiner Überraschung konnte ich diese Woche sogar mal wieder ein wenig raus. Fotos machen mit Rico (oder mindestens die ganze Zeit dreinreden, was für Fotos gemacht werden sollen ;) ) war angesagt. Wiedermal eine dieser Feuerwehrübungen. Zum Glück hat das Wetter am Dienstag sogar noch in einem Anflug von Mitleid mitgespielt. War zwar nicht perfekt, aber besser als Hochnebel und Regen. Nur ein wenig Dunst, ganz passabel. Das Ganze ist für ein regionalisiertes 1to1-Inserat der Städtischen Werke. Das beste daran war wohl das Fahrerlebnis in einem Fiat Punto fast 2 Tage auf sämtlichen möglichen Strassenbelägen und -konditionen die Bodenhaftung zu testen :) . Zwischendurch noch an einen im letzten Moment gestoppten potentiellen Vollbrand gestossen.. War echt was los.

Interessant, was es alles für genoxiges Zeug gibt. Ein Avatar benennt nach mir, die “Pioniere in Sachen oxiditavem Stress”, wahlweise gibt es mich in 10mg und 20mg Dosen, eine mittlerweile Konkurse Compi-Bude aus Zürich (hehehe ..) .. spannend.
Oder: wie man das Mittelmass bekämpft. Autor: Armin Reins. In Die Mörderfackel werden mittelmässige Anzeigen von Werbetextern auseinandergenommen. Soweit ziemlich amüsant. Kritisieren ist zwar ganz spannend (und macht einen Heidenspass :) ), aber ob man’s dann besser machen kann .. Keine Angst. Jeweils 3 Texter präsentieren neben einer kritischen Betrachtung noch ein “So hätt ich’s gemacht!”-Beispiel. Es scheint klar zu sein, dass bei den meisten vorgestellten (ähem ..) Anzeigen die ursprüngliche Idee wohl ganz anders ausgesehen haben muss. Aber eben, wer’s allen recht machen muss, kann nicht erwarten, dass das Resultat von irgendjemandem speziell beachtet werden wird.
Eigentlich nicht verwunderlich: was als “Befreiung aus einer Diktatur” betitelt und als “Demokratisierung” verkauft wurde, ist noch lange nicht vorbei. Afghanistan, nach langer Zeit wiedereinmal in den Schlagzeilen, muss in einer paradoxen Situation geführt werden. Zum einen gilt die - durch Bedingungen der westlichen “Befreier” - festgelegte Staatsform einer Republik nach westlichem Vorbild, zum anderen parallel dazu die Scharia. Dass sich nach Menschenrecht definierte Religionsfreiheit und Scharia in einigen Punkten ziemlich grossflächig in die Quere kommen, scheint den Initianten nicht wirklich klar gewesen zu sein.
Heute habe ich ein wirklich interessantes Album gefunden: Alarm Will Sound plays Aphex Twin. Klassische Interpretationen von Aphex Twin Tunes. Hammer! Ein muss für jeden Aphex Twin Liebhaber. Logon Rock Witch ist ja im Original schon einigermassen “analog” .. Mit echten Streichern aber 10 mal besser :). In diesem Blog hier gibts noch mehr Infos zu Alarm Will Sound.
Das flexible Projektmanagement Tool Achievo ist seit letzter Woche in Version 1.2 (release candidate 1) verfügbar. Das Theme zur neuen Version aus dem Hause genox ist in der Mache. Der erste Migrationsversuch von 1.1 verlief problemlos, es empfiehlt sich jedoch das changelog genau zu lesen (Änderungen an den security profiles). Bin gespannt auf die final version.
Eine schleichende Kreativdepression macht sich breit. Seit zwei Monaten habe ich nur noch PHP und HTML Code gesehen, geschweifte Klammer auf und zu, SELECT * FROM ..
Ein wirklich nettes Tool um die (riesige ;) ) iTunes Musik Bibliothek zu browsen. Und zwar nach Covers. Im Moment gibts nur ein Tech-Demo, welches am 31. März die Funktion aufgeben wird. Eine ziemlich nette Alternative zu Frontrow (welches ich zwar immernoch nicht getestet habe), vorallem aber ein wenig eyecandy um die armen Windows-User neidisch zu machen. :) CoverFlow Website
Alle Jahre wieder: Einmal lass ich’s so richtig krachen und strapaziere mein Kreditkartenlimit mit einer Einkaufstour auf amazon.de. Nachdem ich letztes Jahr nicht wirklich viel Geld für solche Spässe übrig hatte, konnte ich nun ein paar meiner Wunschlisten-Objekte endlich kaufen. “Neubau Welt” ist zwar im Moment ausverkauft. Schade. Das Review im letzten PAGE sowie die Rezensionen sind sehr vielversprechend. Aber das hat ja noch Zeit..

probably one of the more interesting things is to check for your realname or nickname on google and google image search. depending on your past internet activities, the results may frighten you. but it’s a good way to waste time. 8/10 points for this one. reading all kinds of news is the second most valuable time-waster. at least for me. i can easily spend half an hour reading news on all kinds of newsportals. 6/10.
okay .. forget about PNG’s and IE. honestly, just don’t do it. it’s the easiest way. try to avoid it whenever you possibly can. if you really need transparent PNG for your website layout, make a workaround css file, check for the browser with php and load the file with url()-links to PNG8 (only 1bit alpha) or GIF files. mention on your site that people should get a real browser to enjoy the full quality of your site. make a special entry page for ie users telling them to download firefox. there’s no way around that!
i developed an idea together with rico from fotodesign.org. depending on how his school activities are going to evolve, we will eventually form some sort of creative forum on every friday afternoon in some locations around solothurn. the main goal is certainly knowledge transfer (“from and for autolearners”). discussions on topics like user friendlyness, graphic design, web applications, idea development, business rumours and so on. i will surely post some news if it is going to take place somewhen. you can drop me a comment if you would be interested in joining up for the socialising part. i will then inform you if we’re going to start, who, when and where.
a nice tool to grab cover art from amazon(.co.uk/.com/.de/.jp): clutter. finds most covers from major label releases and adds it to all the album tracks with just a single click. too bad it doesn’t find every album. also working but a bit more complicated (and using the same resources afaik): Fetch Art. another approach: “search slothradio”. finds more covers but is a lot more complicated to use. i use clutter and if there’s no hit, “search slothradio” to get my covers.
i’m bored. completely. i wasn’t able to write one single line of code today because our hosting company has a major breakdown. since today, 9am, we’re unable to connect to all our customers www servers. i guess i won’t be able to sleep because i actually don’t have a single database backup. so if they’re storage servers are dead and the backups are not working, i’m pretty much .. fucked. :)
i now tested the following tools, some of them together with my boss and my coworker: PHProjekt, eGroupWare, Group-Office, dotProject, openPSA, webCollab, netOffice, phpGroupware and Achievo. there is no really feature balanced solution around which has good project management approaches and a working implementation of a stable reporting module (except for openPSA, this one is rather massive in all aspects. suddenly it requires midgaard application server to run as apache module. too bad i kicked that bsd server last month ..).
new year, new luck. despite the fact, that all this rumble is just because of a calendar system implemented some hundreds of years ago.. it’s still a good opportunity to get a major hangover on the following day. and that was something i didn’t had this strong since a long time .. wooha.
i now spent 2 full days trying out phprojekt and dotproject. eGroupWare is not in the race anymore, since i can’t manage to install the new RC5 of version 1.2. unfortunately, the 1.x.x versions aren’t available to download anymore.
i took the shoutbox feature offline. the box literally gets filled with spam every night and i’m tired of working my way thru the database table to clean up all “phentermine product informations” every morning. bloody spammers..
theoretically, we planned to switch to a new gw solution by the end of this year. this would be in 2 days if i do that math correctly. well, i guess i wont make it until february, despite the fact that all users need to get the handling straight before we start to professionalize on that sector aswell. the funny thing about deadlines is … you know that story. :)
our companys image archive is now on about 50’000 pictures. everthing is archived in a somewhat freestyle manner, so we really need a solution that makes it easy to handle pictures with keywords, categories et all. first thing i did was to google around for about 5 hours yesterday evening. there’s plenty of image archive solutions out there, but regarding most reviews and user comments, there are 4 “big players” amongst them.
the last piece of hardware in my gamer’s collection: a nintendo ds. i was playing advance wars for about 4 hours today. it’s a nice break from all those first person shooters and “woah we need more polygons!”-games. back to sprites and cutie wootie graphics! time to sell the gameboy advance and wait for the copystation to arrive. hehe.. :) it’s rather huge compared to my GBA sp, about three times as wide. it’s not quite that ergonomic, in fact you have to choose your gaming position wisely to avoid heavy arms. but on the other hand, you have 2 screens (one touchscreen) and wifi.
some would call it holidays, some would call it school - i think it’s more holidays than school at the moment. :) or maybe that’s just because i like the stuff we are doing very much. i’m spending one week in st. gallen. 5 days of school in a row. thanks to sam i don’t have to travel 20 hours this week, spending the nights in his living room. didn’t had the chance to hop around the city so far. even tho the school isn’t really tough, it’s still kinda exhausting, menthally at least. the goal of this week is to receive a minimal approach to drawing - scribbling, to be more precise. since minimalism is anyways what i like best, the stuff suits me very well. the random factor is also quite interesting (minimalism with a touch of randomness: well, what could be better for me?!). i will hopefully be able to upload some pictures by the end of this week.
i reinstalled the whole gallery stuff. now running: gallery2 rc1. i have to say, it’s much more comfortable than gallery1 but there seem to be some small bugs in the display core.. but hey, nobody’s perfect. ;) i also added the long overdue breakpoint 2005 album. have a look at it.
do you know this feeling when you finish work and realize that today, you actually did more on this certain project than there was going on in the last 4 months? - well, today was one of those rare but very powerful and motivating days. i started rather late at 10am, went to the office where i met mister bachmann, our fellow 3D and film cutting freelancer. we spent working together on this projectdefinitions and budget stuff for about 5-6 hours, afterwards a meeting with the client and finally some decisions after 6 months of “uh, who knows what’s actually going on ya??”. this stuff makes my day and it was very cool working together with those.
world of warcraft is a cool game. nothing about that. but what really pisses me off is the fact, that almost everytime i say to myself “let’s do a wow-session”, there’s something wrong with a server. either the authentification server doesn’t authenticate me or i get kicked out in the middle of a game, either connection loss or the game crashes. oh and what is also very cool.. the form you can submit your crash to blizzard can’t connect to their server.
netzklang, the project i worked on with several people is now officially dead because of various reasons. since we already have a homepage for it, we think about using it to promote our own netlabel stuff and maybe add some small broadcast of creative commons music. some small number of channels. nothing fixed yet.
hmm .. i’d really love to have a pantone color survival kit. all guides in a stylish leather box. just need a glass of single malt whiskey and a cigar while browsing my colors .. and an office chair which doesn’t lose screws every now and then. hmm.
i’m now streaming the sounds i’m currently listening to. you can try to tune in on my radiostation. i’m only streaming netlabel music which is royalty free and/or released under the creative commons licence. if you can see the “currently listening” bar on the right of this page, chances are like 60% that i’m also streaming. give it a try. due to limited bandwith, the quality i can offer at the moment is quite sucky. i’m looking for a relais somewhere where i can serve you the full 128kbit/s you deserve.

Today was supposed to be our flight back. That, too, will be an insurance case. However, we got a single hospital bedroom meanwhile. We just make it work somehow. All things considered: it could be worse, of course. I am long past the “5 stages of grief”-thing at this point, that took about 2 weeks. Therapy still doesn’t improve the values but at least I am hovering around 5.9-6.4 g/dl HGB. Normal is around 13.

The laaawd has heard my prayers, and I am now a happy camper in the Payload CMS open source headless CMS camp. Only thing that doesn’t vibe with me that much is the dependency on nextjs they basically introduced right about the time I discovered it. But oh well. This is much more than just a content platform. I see great potential. I’ll take it!

I wanted to write an article about headless CMS and why it seems impossible to find a solution that works well for editorial content AND offers decent editing experience AND offers on-premise data/open source. But then I realised: It is pointless to make arguments. Either you are ok with the fact that the cool kids on the block with the fancy UX charge for their services and do not offer 100% open source or you are ok with the editing experience and the administration overhead when you choose something that you need to run yourself. That’s the adjustable knob. So I always end up back where I started, sanity.io ..

Been using a Moonlander split keyboard for a few weeks now. Was intimidating at first but I’m already used to it now. Still not as fast as before but improvements are noticeable daily. Definitely allows for a more relaxed posture while typing. And so many options to configure, woohoo!

In order to overcome this pandemic (and future events like that), we need to learn how to handle it, maybe even co-exist, without constant panic attacks that cause system wide earthquakes. The world is not going to end. The system needs to be healthy enough to handle this and we need to make sure that it is scaled accordingly. Make health care a public service and don’t run organizations that essentially handle life and death like a fucking start-up.

Every game I was hyped for in the past 18 months turned out to be quite the disappointment. Cyberpunk, Battlefield 2042 and even Farming Simulator 22, just to name a few. Other games are in eternal Early Access Mode. Others feel like a candy store, engineered to grab kid’s lunch money. Others like a never ending grind of “Battle Pass” after “Battle Pass”. Digital distribution definately changed the gaming landscape. Not long ago, EA said that full releases have to cost $70 because expenses have risen. Coincidentally, that’s about the point in time when things started to go down hill, too.

Switched to WebStorm IDE about 3 months ago and ditched VS Code. Just finished a large refactoring of 3 Next JS projects that were based on the same foundation. The refactoring was much more painless because of WebStorm’s excellent refactoring tools. I think I’ll stick with it, this time around.

yarn 3.0.0 was released last week and so far it was a great upgrade from yarn 0.2x. Works great as a drop-in replacement. Glad I skipped 2.x. ;)
