groupware, second round

December 30, 2005
netz

i now spent 2 full days trying out phprojekt and dotproject. eGroupWare is not in the race anymore, since i can’t manage to install the new RC5 of version 1.2. unfortunately, the 1.x.x versions aren’t available to download anymore.

i will let the users decide - they will test the two suites next week, click around and see which tool is easier for them to live with. everything is more complicated than haveing an excel sheet for timetracking. :) so they will have to adapt themselves. i can live with both. we can still switch to a pay-solution next year or the year after. depending on our revenues .. ;)

don’t understand me wrong: i think opensource software is a great thing. it enables small companies like ours to use instruments we couldn’t afford to buy from companies like abacus software et all. but all of these opensource groupware suites have a big disadvantage. there’s always a rotten dog hidden somewhere beneath the tool, making it a bit hard to adapt. and the tools with the best eyecandy aren’t always the tools with the most stable features. :) thank god there’s css .. ;)
