Welcome, stranger

This website has been around in one form or another since the year 2000, the year I first got my hands dirty with all things web technology related. That's when I got serious about creating interactive stuff for the web. There have been many iterations of this page and many different approaches used. And unfortunately, most of the historic content was lost to the abyss of the internet with each iteration.

About me

My name is Oliver Studer, I was born in 1982 and raised in the backwaters of Switzerland. Got in to computers early and with quite a force, much to the detriment of those who'd have preferred that I learn my latin vocabulary while attending Gymnasium. So I eventually dropped out and finished obligatory school on a lower level. I never liked school much, to be honest, and in retrospect, all this period of my life caused me is returning nightmares of missing school, bad grades, and being jailed in a space where I didn't felt comfortable, ever.

Eventually got in to graphic design and web development by reading as many books as I could possibly find and getting my first few jobs at small web and communcation agencies. Finally ended up founding my own one man operation in 2008 and that's basically what I've been doing since - with a quick detour by co-founding NEEO and leaving 2 years in.

My job is basically what I did since I was 12 years old: playing around with tech and being creative. I can't imagine it any other way. I don't do much else than that and my interests mostly evolve around this space, too. And frankly, I'm totally ok with that. I do enjoy playing games with my friends though and get my VST synths out, once in a while. And I can probably make you believe that I'm a semi professional photographer by showing off my Nikon D800. Mostly limited to taking pictures of moss and other stuff in the forest, though.

At this point, I need to give a special shout out to the Demoscene, which was quite a deciding influence of all that came later in my life in terms of interests and career. It's where my hunger for visual design was initiated, where I spent most of my creativity between fiteen and twenty years old. It's where I learned to work as a team with designers, programmers and musicians and how to bridge those tiny gaps that can sometimes arise between those groups' focuses. Fond memories for sure.

About the content

This blog doesn't exist as a front for my career planning, my company or some other SEO related best practice. In fact, I don't care wether my opinions are wanted, boring, controversial or plainly uninteresting. I use this blog to write down stuff that is somehow worth writing down in my eyes – or simply because I need to fucking vent. All of this stuff is basically just me dumping my brain on to the web, usually not that often. And because I can't stop building yet another incarnation of a blog stack. Frankly, I guess that's the main reason I'm doing this, anyways. :-P

I also decided to make this a social network free zone: you won't find any links and there's no tracking scripts. 'Cause, you know, I don't care. And I'm not here to sell you something, either. All I do is record some visits using Matomo and JS errors on sentry.io. All anonymised. The comments are self-hosted, too. I got you covered, feel free and feel at home. Go grab a beer and join me in venting about all the stupid fucking shit that's going on, hehe.
