Leaving Adobe software behind

I was using Adobe software since I first got a (*cough* not entirely legal *cough*) version of Photoshop about 20 years ago. When I started my own business, I bought licences for Creative Suite and switched over to the subscription model as soon as it was introduced. Since my daily business shifted to being very screen-centric and print became a side effect of sorts, I was tossing around the idea of quitting Adobe software for quite a while. Since my renewal was up by December 2019, I ended up cancelling. To be honest, it felt weird.

Since I'm working on a lean budget, I can't justify paying for anything that I do not use, or only use very rarely. Since Photoshop really isn't the tool to use for designing web-related content anymore and I haven't used InDesign in almost 2 years, that was rather easy. The only thing I used from time to time was Lightroom.

But for the rare occasions you still need to have those yummy contrast layer masks and stuff? That business card layout? Well, I decided to put my eggs in the Affinity basket for all things related to graphic design software. Since I use Figma exclusively for everything that ends up on a screen, there's not much to worry about in regards to screendesign.

Lightroom can be easily replaced with Darktable, an open source project. And since Extensis Suitcase doesn't help much with Affinity Apps or Figma, I also switched my font collection/management to Typeface.

All in all, I spent about a year worth of Adobe subscription fees to buy lifetime licenses for applications that are good enough for my needs. And if the requirement for something like Premiere or After Effects should arise, I hope it is a commercial project, so cost can be pushed up the chain.

I should have done this a lot sooner. For some reason I kept on thinking that I will need one of the apps at some point. But I never did..
